  1. Denise,

I really don't think anyone can ever get over the loss of a mother.

Especially a mother that has such a special place in our heart, as it is so obvious that YOUR mother has.

She sounds like such a wonderful woman....how lucky for you to carry so many traits from her. I feel so much the same way when someone says you are acting just like your mother. What a wonderful compliment when I hear those sweet words.

I hope you enjoy your trip to Ireland......let us know how your trip was when you get back!!!!

  2. I was deeply moved by your words, and your open-ness, and the pain that came through so loud and clear. I'm so sorry that you are in the midst of such a painful situation. I wish you strength to get through it....you will be ok. Lean on us here, please...........many have words of encouragement that will help pull us through. You are in my thoughts today....and you'll be in my prayers too.

    Warm Hugs,

    Melinda

  3. Welcome Libby!!!

I'm so glad you not only found the site, but joined in.

And it's nice to hear that both you and your mother have such a great sense of humor. I think we all know that if we let it, the ugly critter that you mentioned can bring us way down.

Please keep us posted on your Mom.

  4. Cindi,

    I thought you'd NEVER ask!!

I better make it something good after such a great day. Make it a vodka gimlet. I only have those on special occasions cause I've been known to have a few too many once I get started. But what the heck........CHEERS!!

Thanks everyone for the replies. It really makes someone feel special to hear that others are sharing in both their bad AND good news.

My prayers will continue for all of you as well.

  5. Howdie all,

Well, we finally got the results back from the doctor today. It has been 2 months since my Mom started taking Tarceva. The doctor was very pleased with the results. He told us the tumors hadn't shrunk (YET) but that there were no new spots showing up. The tarceva is working and he said he would see her in a month for another scan. She is slowly getting her energy back to where she is feeling more like herself and after the news today is on cloud 9.

I think God is hearing our prayers...... :D

  6. I always thought that I would never be able to deal with the news that something had happened to my mom. I'll never forget that call from my older sister telling me that my Mom found out she had lung cancer and they were giving her 3-6 months. She has continued to be strong, and brave and stay optimistic and never give in. She refuses to go without the best fight she has. That is why she is here with us now. We have become so much closer since learning the devastating news. I never take her for granted anymore. I truly love and respect my Mom for the person that she is. She is definately one of a kind!!!!

  7. Hello everyone,

I would first like to ask if anyone can help me put my mothers journey with cancer like all of you have on the bottom. I'm sure I'm overlooking it, but can't seem to find it!!!

Also, wanted to share that my Mom has been on Tarceva since June 22nd. She has been going to the doctor every three weeks to get her chest x-ray and blood levels checked. Each time it has been good. On Friday, she will be going in for the "big one" though. She is having a CT scan to find out exactly how well the Tarceva has been working. I'm staying positive when I talk to her about it, but I'm SO scared. We have to wait until Wednesday for the results. It's going to be a very long week and even LONGER weekend. ughhhh

Keeping my fingers crossed and praying, praying, praying!!!!

  8. I watched the Peter Jennings special last night and was very moved with the way they portrayed how truly special he was. What an amazing man. Because of both his death and Dana Reeves news release, lung cancer is finally getting the much needed attention it deserves. It was something I had never even thought of until it hit home when my mother was diagnosed last September. Now, I just can't get enough information about it.

Thanks to all of you, I keep learning more and more every day!!!

  9. Pat & Brian,

I haven't posted much, but continue to read the posts from everyone. I think that because we live so close to each other and the fact that Brian and my mother started tarceva within a day of each other, I've kept a close eye on your posts just to see how you two are doing. I'm very sorry to hear that the tarceva didn't work. But, I think it is wonderful that you have a doctor that is willing to go the extra step to make sure you can figure out something that WILL work. And your attitude is so addicting. Everyone has their down days....but you seem to snap right back in place and continue to fight. I will continue to pray for Brian.

  10. Welcome Shar!!!!

I am a newcomer as well...and wanted to welcome you and say hello. I wish I could give you lots of information about Tarceva, but I don't know much yet. My Mom just started taking it June 22. She will be going to the doctor on Wednesday, July 13th for her first scan since starting taking it so I'm sure we'll know much more then. I'm so happy to hear that the Tarceva has been helping you. Glad you found this site....keep us updated :)

  11. Thanks for the warm welcome Amie.

Well informed definately describes the people here. I am so glad I found this website. It has been a little difficult at times to get back to work after getting involved reading the posts. There is so much I want to learn about the cancer...I feel it is the best way to fight "IT". I'm trying to get my Mom into getting online because I just know that after reading some of the posts her attitude would be a little more positive, but I guess everyone has their highs and lows days.

She never did get the rash from the tarceva and I know how scared she is to get her scan next Wednesday. It's going to be a long weekend...but, she's a fighter. :D

    Prayers to you also,

    Melinda

  12. Thanks for all the warm welcomes!!!

Just back at work today after spending the weekend with my Mom and step dad. We were all hoping that my Mom would be getting that darn rash...but no such luck. She has an appointment for another scan this Wednesday so we'll be praying that the Tarceva really can work without the side effects. Hope everyone had a good 4th of July weekend. :)

    Melinda

  13. Pat....from Leslie's response...I'll be praying that both my Mom and Brian will be getting the rash soon!!!

Leslie....thank you for your knowledge and advice.

I'll pass it on to my Mom today.

Thank you both for responding so quickly.

I'll remember both of you and your families in my prayers....

    Hugs,

    Melinda

  14. Hello everyone. After spending hours the last couple days reading the posts...I wanted to introduce myself.

The support and outpouring of concern and care from what I have read is so comforting. It is nice to know that others are going through the same types of difficult bumps in the road.

My mother was diagnosed with lung cancer in September 04. She is 68 years old and has smoked heavily for many many years. She did quit as soon as she found out, which makes me so proud of her. She has been through radiation and chemo. The last treatment wasn't working so her doctor has just recently put her on tarceva. She started taking it June 22 and we are praying for the rash to show up. Kind of a double edged sword to want that, but I keep hearing that if you don't get the rash it isn't working properly. Does anyone know if there is much truth to that?? Also, can anyone tell me how long it usually takes?

Thanks to everyone already who has posted...I've gained so much knowledge already.

    Melinda :D [/b]
