  1. Approval denied to recognize November as Lung Cancer Awareness Month. :(

    I want to cry!!

I am really distraught about this. The reason given was because of the number of proclamations they receive and the process they use to determine approval. I don't understand.

I am starting a petition in our state and hoping to get 1000 signatures by the end of the month.

Here is the petition...please give me feedback!!

This is a request for Governor Bredeson and the Director of Community Affairs of the State of Tennessee to proclaim November as Lung Cancer Awareness Month. The initial approval was denied due to the number of proclamation request received. However, lung cancer kills more people than breast, prostate, colon, liver, kidney, and melanoma cancers combined making it the nation's #1 cancer killer. With Tennessee ranking fourth in national lung cancer mortality rates, it is time this disease becomes a priority in our state. This is an important first step in increasing awareness of lung cancer and showing support for those dealing with the disease. Please sign our petition in support of making November Lung Cancer Awareness Month in the State of Tennessee.

I want to have this finished by tomorrow to begin signatures on Tuesday...

    Thanks friends!

    Jamie

  4. Maybe a shawl or an item to lay under someones's arm as they are receiving chemo. If I remember correctly, my arm always needed cushioning from the chair I was sitting in.

    God Bless!!

  5. If you were a newly diagnosed patient and your oncologist gave you a lung cancer survivor kit, what would you like to have in it?

We are preapring another fundraiser in November, Playing for a Cure Bowlathon, with Lungevity(Thanks Katie). One of the things that we are doing is putting together a Surivors Kit for newly diagnosed patients that we will distribute to local physicians to give to patients.

What should be included in it? Give me some feedback please!!!

Te bowlathon is scheduled for November 8th and 9th in Memphis. Mark your calendar and come join us on Saturday!!

    God Bless!

    Jamie

    Good Morning

My name is Jamie Young and I am a wife, mother, teacher, local musician and 3 ½ year advanced lung cancer survivor. Can you imagine the devastation my family and I felt when I was diagnosed with the nations #1 cancer killer at the young age of 35?

Did you know that lung cancer kills over 160,000 people each year and more than breast, cervical and ovarian cancer combined? Or that Shelby county plays host to more lung cancer deaths that any other county in the state with an estimated 493 people in our county dying from this disease? Or that Tennessee ranks #4 in the nation with an estimated 4490 people dying from lung cancer this year alone?

The question now is “What can we do”? To start, this week on September 5th at 7 p.m. central standard time on ABC, CBS and NBC, a nationally televised program called Stand Up For Cancer will be aired and will help raise awareness about this disease and many others as well as raise money for cancer research.

This is an awesome opportunity and I would love to share my story with you and help continue to educate the community about this disease. The stigma attached to this disease should not overshadow the need for compassion for people dealing with lung cancer in our community or across the nation.

Please help me with my mission and let me share my story with you and the community!

Thank you so much for your time and consideration and I look forward to speaking with you!

    Sincerely,

    Jamie Young
