Mark,
First of all, please accept my condolences on the loss of your mother. I wish you'd found us before her passing so that we could've provided some support to you.
Secondly, I'm sorry to read of your father's melanoma. My FIL is dealing with a very rare, very aggressive skin cancer that's similar to melanoma, and when I did a google search for the particular type of cancer, I got LOTS of info, so you might want to try that. And I second the motion to get your father to sign a release so you can talk to his doctors.
Good luck in your search for info and in finding a cure!

Definitely, Amy - send that stemware! No one has mentioned anything like that, but I think it would sell. I collect pretty, themed, or just plain odd individual wine glasses, so I might just have to buy one for myself. (And I'll wait til after I see them to figure out which category they fit into! )
For my contribution, I think I'm gonna make these gingerbread candle things. I couldn't even explain it to ViVi on the phone, so I won't even give it much of an effort here, except to say that you make gingerbread "panels" that you make into a square with no bottom or top, then put a candle inside. The shape is of a house, church, santa, etc., with appropriate holes cut out. You can even melt crushed-up candy in the "windows" to make it look like stained glass. Anyway, they last for several seasons if you store them correctly, they're very pretty, and when a candle is burning inside the smell is supposed to be great. I saw the idea in a magazine or book last year, but never got around to making them. And it might take me til Christmas to find that magazine/book again . . .
Y'all keep those good ideas coming!

TBone's LC diagnosis was a direct result of brain met symptoms. He started having headaches about a week before Christmas last year. He'd always had headaches, but these were different - he said it was an excruciating pain right in the middle of his head. The headache would come and go, and while he had it, he also heard strange "whirring" noises. He kept thinking something was wrong with the wheel on the car, but it wasn't - he was just hearing things. He started worrying when he began to have some numbness in his rght hand. It was odd numbness - he couldn't shake the salt shaker or hold a pen or pencil. We took him to the ER on Christmas Eve cause the headache was so bad. A CT scan revealed three brain tumors, and the ER doc said the largest one was so large that he shouldn't even be conscious. The CT scan also showed that the tumors were bleeding (it was "white" around the tumor on the scan), and the doc said the pain came when it was actually bleeding.
And thus our lives changed forever . . .

Your Mom - and you and Malinda - have a special place in our hearts, so of course we'll offer up many prayers. I know this is so hard . . . I just wish there was more we could do.

You know you're Trailer Trash when:
1. The Halloween pumpkin on your porch has more teeth than your spouse.
2. You let your twelve-year-old daughter smoke at the dinner table in front of her kids.
3. You've been married three times and still have the same in-laws.
4. You think a woman who is "out of your league" bowls on a different night.
5. Jack Daniels makes your list of "most admired people".
6. You wonder how service stations keep their restrooms so clean.
7. Anyone in your family died right after saying "Hey - Watch this!!"
8. You think Dom Perignon is a mafia leader.
9. Your junior prom had a daycare.
10. Your wife's hairdo was once ruined by a ceiling fan.
11. You think the last words of the Star Spangled Banner are:
"Gentlemen, Start Your Engines"!
12. You lit a match in the bathroom and your house exploded right off its wheels.
13. The bluebook value of your truck goes up and down, depending on how much gas is in it.
14. You have to go outside to get something from the fridge.
15. One of your kids was born on a pool table.
16. You need one more hole punched in your card to get a freebie at the House of Tattoos.
17. You can't get married to your sweetheart because there's a law against it.
18. You think "loaded dishwasher" means your wife is drunk.
19. Your toilet paper has page numbers on it.
20. Your front porch collapses and kills more than five dogs.

Good one, Frank. A little too close to home, but good nonetheless.

Wow, Frank. When I started reading all that, I thought you might be making it up (given your propensity to full around with us at times), but the more I read, the more I realized that surely you couldn't make all that up! While I haven't gone and looked it up, I'll believe you for now, and want to thank you for this enlightening little trivia fest.
And by the way - I liked the joke. I liked Don's response, but I liked the joke too. Even if you are on the "other" side.

Well, I would say "Welcome," but since you were here first, I guess I should say "Welcome Back!" I'm so sorry to hear about your Mom's new primary - that had to be quite a blow. But hopefully the Iressa will do the trick.
From your signature, it's obvious that you've had more than your share of this little LC stuff. It really sucks, doesn't it?
Let us know how we can help.

Hey - if she responds to my e-mail, I'm still gonna ask her to come help with the Holiday Extravaganza!
Thanks for the update, Katie. I had a feeling it might be something like that.

Nell,
So very sorry to hear of your accident! I can just imagine how scared your husband must have been to watch such an incident.
And I too think you must have someone looking out for you. Or maybe it's a BUNCH of people . . . all these friends we've lost here lately.
Take care of that wrist, and be careful!

I just sent her an e-mail, and threatened to start calling all the Rakestraws in the Atlanta phone book (and there are a LOT!) if she doesn't check in with us. Ry, if you have a number for her, it might save me some time!!

Kickin' it back up!
And for those of you who might be getting confused . . . I'm doing this Holiday Extravaganza fundraiser, and kitkathi has said she'll start to work on a cookbook. Between these two things, we're bound to put some smiles on Katie and Rick's faces! And boy do they deserve it!

I certainly don't mean to make light of this serious condition, but I have to tell y'all . . . as someone who's never really had any health problems, and in particular no breathing problems, I've been on this site for months but I STILL read SOB to be something other than Shortness Of Breath. For all I know, dyspnea might be an SOB. But he sure has a strange name!
Y'all take a deep breath and take care -

Congratulations to your step-daughter on her marriage, and congratulations to you for being such a terrific father that she asked YOU to escort her down the aisle. Now if THAT doesn't show you're a great guy, I just don't know what does!
Can't wait to see that photo!

Welcome to this wonderful place where we all hate to be! Please let us know how we can be of support to you . . . the folks here who have lung cancer can give you such great insight and advice, and I'm sure you'll be able to do the same. Keep posting so we can get to know you better!
Oh yeah - are you in the St. Louis area? My in-laws live in Bonne Terre, about an hour south of St. Louis. My FIL is battling a very rare, very aggressive skin cancer (similar to melanoma) and goes to an oncologist in St. Louis, but I'm not sure of his name. I'd be interested to hear of your experience with doctors in that area.

That's quite a visual for so early in the morning, Snowflake!
Wendy - I have absolutely no advice for you. This string of posts just makes me cringe and be so glad I haven't had that type of surgery! I truly admire the strength all you folks have mustered through your diagnoses.
