  1. Hello Everyone,

My parents and I visited with Mom's oncologist today for the results of ther scans. The scan showed that she has a 20% increase in the size of the lymph nodes in her mediastinal area and a 40% increase in her liver mets. She completed six rounds of chemo (vp16/carbo) eight weeks ago. He took her right into chemo today for another two rounds. If she does not respond he will them try changing her chemo drug. This is not good news as she was not off the chemo long enough to get any of her strength back. She was in a pretty good mood today despite all this bad news. I am planning a 50th wedding anniversery party for her and Dad in August and she is very excited about that. She wrote out her guest list while she was getting chemo today. I just hope the chemo works so she can feel better for her big day. :D

Thank you for all your support. You guys are great!!

  2. Shelli,

I'm so sorry that your mom is having such a bad week. My mom is also having a very hard time this week and we are very worried about her. It is very hard when you want to do something and you don't know what to do to help them feel better. Lets just hope and pray that next week will be a much better week for our mothers.

    God Bless,

    Susan M.

  3. Hello everyone,

Mom is not doing real good this week. Yesterday my Dad had to bring her down to the onc because she was having such severe nausea and has not eat anything for a few days. The onc is not sure what is going on so her gave her some fluids and IV nausea drug which are not helping. She also is taking nausea meds at home. Over the last few weeks she has grown increasingly more weak and is now using her oxygen 24 hours a day again. Her last chemo treatment was six weeks ago and her scan was good right after that. It has been four weeks since her last scan and her onc wanted to keep a eye on her liver mets ( her lung mass was gone but liver mets had shrunk 50%). She will not get the results of her scan until next week on Wednesday. I'm afraid something is going on. She still is getting the shots for her RBC's and her last blood work done yesterday was good. I don't understand why she is getting sick now when she did not have one bit of nausea when she was on Chemo. Dad says she also has periods of hot flashes where she will just sweat for a while and then she is cold. Has anyone had any similar experiences.

    Thanks for listening,

    Susan M.

  4. Hello and welcome,

I am also confused why they checked x-rays so soon. My mom has SCLC and she did not notice alot of symptom relief until after her third round of chemo. Her scans were checked after the third round of chemo and the mediastinal mass was 50% gone and after the 6th round it was almost 100% gone. Don't get discouraged as it takes a few weeks for the chemo to do it's thing and SCLC does respond well to chemo.

  5. Katie,

Thanks for your reply. I quess those liver mets are very stubborn. It sounds like both our parents had the same thing SCLC with mets to liver. I hope that mom can take at least a one or two month break so her counts can recover. I pray your Dad's x-ray will be good news. Keep us updated.

Thanks again for all your support.

  6. Hi everyone,

Thanks for your support. Mom had her appointment today with the oncologist and he was very happy with the results. He stated that the lung mass had shrunk almost completely but there still is a few spots on her liver. He is going to rescan her in three weeks to see if the spots on the liver shrink any more. It seems like the liver mets did not respond as well as the lung mass. If the mets have not shrunk in three weeks he will suggest that she start another round of chemo using different drugs. He does not want to wait and allow the cancer to get ahead of them. My mom has called all my bothers and sister and told them she is now cancer free. :? I quess that is the way she interpeted the visit. I don't think that she understands that the mets in the liver is cancer. I quess I will let her have her excitement and not spoil it for her. She may start chemo again as soon as three weeks. If that happens she is not going to be a very happy lady. But for now she is on cloud nine. Her counts were very low so she was given another shot today. I hope that this helps. The doctor told her she does not need her oxygen I just think she is afraid to go without it. Maybe now that she has proof that her lungs are better she will try a little harder to do without it. Katie and Laurie did either of your parents have to continue chemo and for how long?? I appreciate you listening to my story. It sure is a rollercoaster ride sometimes.

    Thanks for your prayers,

    Susan M.

  7. Hi Everyone,

Sorry I have not posted sooner but I just got the results today of the scan and I had to sneak and get them myself ( I work for the same multi specialty group that did her scan) She will get the official results from her oncologist on Wednesday. Her scan was last week on Wednesday. I cannot believe the doctor did not call her yet with the results. :x Anyway my mom does not know that I peeked but it was driving me crazy. Her scan showed considerable decrease in her mediastinal mass and her liver mets have shrunk by 50%. It did show some infiltrates in the lung that were not on the last scan but I'm not sure what that means. :? She also has a mass on her adrenal gland that did not change since the last scan. She is not scheduled to have any more chemo at this time. It will be interesting to see what the doctor suggests. It makes me a little nervous taking her off chemo but I think she needs a break. She is feeling really weak and hardly able to get around. She is agian using her oxygen 24/7. I just want to know if they stop chemo for a while will the tumors start to grow again right away. I guess that is a question for the doc. I will keep you posted after her visit.

    Thanks for all your support!!

  8. Hello Everyone,

I was hoping to be able to post scan results by now but mom was not able to get her scans until yesterday and we will get the results Friday. She is not feeling very well all the sudden this week. She finished her last round of chemo three weeks ago. Dad says she is so weak that she goes to bed at 5:00 pm and does not get up until around 7:00am. Then she sleeps most of the day. Her throat is very sore (she did not have radiation) and she has several sores in her mouth. I just wonder if the same "chemo" sores she has in her mouth are also in the throat area. The doc gave her some medication for this but it is not helping. So she also is not eating very well and is using her oxygen again 24 hours a day. I'm wondering if she needs a transfusion as she was close to needing one a few weeks ago. Anyway I will post as soon as we get some results of her scans. Please keep us in your prayers.

    God Bless,

    Susan M.

  9. Hi Laurie,

Thanks for your concern and prayers for my mother. I continue to keep you and your mother in my prayers and I was so happy to hear that she is doing well and returned to work :D . My mother is doing very well right now. She had her last chemo thursday and the doctor says she is going to take a break for a while. She hardly ever uses her oxygen. She will get her scans next week to see how much shrinkage there is. I can't hardly wait to hear the results of her scan as I have a good feeling about them. I will post after we get the results. ( In the good news section :D:D )

    Hugs,

  10. Hi Canuckwebgrrl,

I'm sorry that you have found the need to visit this board. This board is a great place to find answers to questions and get support from people who are going through the same thing as you are. Our stories seem to be similar as my mother was diagnosed with SCLC on 1-3-03 extensive with mets to the liver and lymph node involvement. At first she did not seem so sick but her disease progressed very fast. She now is on her 5th round of chemo and doing very well. Her last scans which were three treatments ago show significant shrinkage in her mediastinal masses and also showed that her liver mets were less with significant shrinkage of the remaining mets. The worse part has been the weakness and fatigue she feels the week of and the week after chemo. She goes for chemo every three weeks. She has only two more treatments planned and they will check scans. If you look at Laurie's posts she also has a mother with SCLC and she is in remisson right now. Her posts have given me hope that my mother will soon be in remission. Don't give up hope as there are many survivors of extensive SCLC out there. I will keep you and your step father in my prayers. Keep us posted on his progress.

    Lots of Hugs!!

    Susan M.

  11. Dear Jean,

My sympathy goes out to you at this difficult time. Your mother in law is now in a wonderful place and someday you will be reunited with her.

God Bless you and your family,

    Susan M.
