we did decide to get a second opinion, even though we believed it to be futile based on what v. good nyc dr said. amazingly, the sloan kettering dr says there may be some treatments possible for mil - not curative, but perhaps will buy her more time. thanks for your advice.

That is wonderful news!

Think about it this way.

"...buy her some time..."

That statement left on it's own is a negative postive....

but "...buy her some time..." ....."until something new/better comes along..." is a hopeful positive.

I can't begin to tell you how many survivors I know who began their treatments as "pallative" or to "buy more time" who are living well with cancer months and years after initial diagnosis- some have achieved remission and others are NED (No evidence of disease)

I am praying this for your MIL.
