Hey all,

My Pop-Pop came home from the hospital yesterday. It was confirmed that he it now on his forth bought of pneumonia since December. All Chemo treatments have been suspended due to his condition. He is now on oxygen pretty much 24/7. He has nurses, respitory specialists and all sorts of people checking on him. I am just scared that the pneumonia is going to take awhile to improve, and it will be too late to restart the Tarceva. He may look young, but he is 82 years old and is a very sick man. I just need some words of advice. I just feel so lost and upset. I have been trying to be the strong one for the family, but on the inside I am a wreck.......

It may sound like a cliche, but it is important to take it one day at a time. Don't spend today worrying about what might happen tomorrow. If your Pop-pop is a little better today than he was yesterday--that's good. Keep adding those together and you can handle it.

Many folks on this board experienced a good bit of time between dx and treatment so that is probably not as urgent as getting the pneumonia cleared up.

We will be here for you.

The ups and downs of lung cancer are so hard to deal with. I'm sorry your pop pop has this complication. I'm still kinda a newbie but it does seem like it's always two steps forward, one step back or at least one to the side.

It's important that you take care of your own needs so that you can be strong for your family. Even the littlest thing like renting your favorite movie or taking a walk. Have lunch or dinner with a girlfriend who makes you laugh.

I'm really the only strong one for us; and it gets really tough. If I didn't have my friends, I'm not sure I'd make it. And I do try to get some time to myself, even if it's only for a couple of hours.

The good news that I can share is that it seems like the doctors have lots of options for when, what and how to give treatment. So even if your pop pop has a little delay because of the pneumonia, there will be some kind of cancer kick-butt option when he's ready.

Good luck! Kathleen

Hey there. It is so hard not to worry. But he really does need to get better before starting the tarceva so you just need to focus on that for now. Days here or there really can't make that big a difference in the larger scheme of things. So as others have said, you just need to take it one day at a time and deal with what you've got. It's hard to do though. So take a deep breath and know that there are many here hoping for a quick recovery for your dad.

I pray that you pop-pop will feel better soon so he can resume treatment.

Pneumonia can be a real bear to get rid of. You really do need to take it one day at a time though. There are so many of us how try to be the strong one including me. It can definitely take its toll on you. You have to take time for you so you can remain strong for your family.
