Need info on Cancer Facilities in Buffalo/Ohio Detroit areas

Very briefly, this is what the situation is -

My mom has been diagnosed with SCLC (yesterday)

The only facility that we can get into says that it may be another week or TWO to see an oncologist. All we have at this point is a diagnosis.

I don't want to wait 2 weeks and frankly, with the coughing she's been doing, I don't think it's a good idea - her breathing is getting worse.

I've asked to be referred to a major cancer hospital in Toronto, but was told that it would probably be faster sticking with the referral we've already got.

At this point, we're willing to pack up a wheel barrow of cash and head to the States to get her seen by specialists there - but who? Where?

Do you need a referral in the States for everything like it seems you need here in Canada? We hear rumblings that as long as you can pay, you'll be seen "right away".

Can ANYONE suggest what we should do? We're in southern Ontario, panicking, frustrated and willing to travel.

Hi Deuro,

Sorry to hear about your mom. Don't blame you for wanting to get the ball rolling. Not sure on the referral process coming from Canada. Hear is a site that lists (NCI-designated Cancer Centers (P30)

Cancer Centers Listed by State) in the USA. I would start calling some of the places you think you might be interested in. They should be able to help you with the process. Hope this helps. My thoughts and prayers are with your mom and you for the best of results. Peace, take care and God Bless.

Rich

Hi,

Roswell Park Cancer Institute is in downtown Buffalo just across the Peace Bridge in Fort Erie, Ontario. It is a very good facility with the latest treatments. I can send you the phone number if you want and you could call them and ask about referrals, etc. I think you only need a referral if your insurance company requests one.

Where are you located? Also some good facilities in the Detroit (Karmonos Cancer Center and others) and Ann Arbor (U of M) area. I would think as long as you are paying your bill, no one cares how it gets paid. Most are on-line you can get on and check. Let us know what's closest.
