I take Essiac three times a day and have been for 2 years. Don't know if it works, but can't say that it doesn't either. Not gonna stop now to find out.

Linda,
I'm also trying to get off steroids, Decadron, for the second time. The first time about a year ago it took about two months. This time is worse. I went back on them during a Phase I Clinical Trial to give me energy and help the appetite. It worked, but getting off is difficult.
I was taking 2mg pills, twice a day initially and got down to 1mg every two days and don't seem to be able to get rid of them completely. On the 3rd day without them I get extremely fatigued and short of breath. I feel good just two to three hours after I go back on them. Weight gain is another problem since they induce the appetite and all I want to do is eat. The Doc says that my body should be able to take over and function without them, but it is aslo possible that a small dosage may be required permanently.
Sorry Linda that I haven't helped you much, but maybe someone else has had some experience they would like to share.
Good luck with it.

Hi Tom,
Welcome to our site. Sorry you have a need to be here but glad you found us.
Probably the most important thing to begin your journey is to get the opinions and an evaluation from the experts at one of the Cancer Institutes in your area. Looks like you would have reasonable access to two of them, Memorial Sloan Kettering in New York or Fox Chase in Philadelphia. I feel it would be worth the effort and they make it very easy and will get you in without delay. I personally went that way at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo NY and am sure thankful I did. I am a 2 year survivor of Stage 4 Lung Cancer and am still doing well.
You can always get your treatment closer to home if that is a problem, but the original evaluation is the important thing rather than doing a trial and error type thing.
Good luck with it Tom and keep us advised of your progress. Hang tough and God Bless.

Peggy,
Please re-consider and stay with us. Take a little break if need be, but stay. You have contributed so much to many of us. For anyone to even suggest that it is time to move on is absurd. Please let us support you in your time of need as you have supported all of us.

Bill,
I had a Thoracentesis when I was first diagnosed and also had the pain. Their explanation, in fact the Doc explained it before the procedure, was that the lung had collapsed from the weight of the fluid and the pain was caused by the lung re-inflating. He said to breathe deeply as much as I could stand which I did and it soon went away when the lung remained re-inflated on its own. Good luck to your wife with it. It wasn't fun, but then again, there is little that is fun about this freakin disease.

THE WORLD'S SHORTEST FAIRY TALE
Once upon a time, a guy asked a girl "Will you marry me?"
The girl said, "NO!"
And the guy lived happily ever after and went fishing, hunting and played golf a lot and drank beer and farted whenever he wanted.

Older but not Wiser
A woman decides to have a facelift for her 50th birthday. She spend
$15,000 and feels pretty good about the results. On her way home, she
stops at a newsstand to buy a newspaper. Before leaving, she says to the
clerk, "I hope you don't mind my asking, but how old do you think I am?"
"About 32," is the reply.
"Nope! I'm exactly 50," the woman says happily.
A little while later she goes into McDonald's and asks the counter girl
the very same question.
The girl replies, "I'd guess about 29."
The woman replies with a big smile, "Nope, I'm 50."
Now she's feeling really good about herself. She stops in a drug store
on her way down the street. She goes up to the counter to get some mints
and asks the clerk this burning question.
The clerk responds, "Oh, I'd say 30."
Again she proudly responds, "I'm 50, but thank you!"
While waiting for the bus to go home, she asks an old man waiting next
to her the same question.
He replies, "Lady, I'm 78 and my eyesight is going. Although, when I was
young, there was a sure-fire way to tell how old a woman was. It sounds
very forward, but it requires you to let me put my hands under your bra.
Then, and only then can I tell you EXACTLY how old you are."
They wait in silence on the empty street until her curiosity gets the
best of her. She finally blurts out, "What the hell, go ahead."
He slips both of his hands under her blouse and begins to feel around
very slowly and carefully. He bounces and weighs each breast and he
gently pinches each nipple. He pushes her breasts together and rubs them
against each other.
After a couple of minutes of this, she says, "Okay, okay...How old am
I?"
He completes one last squeeze of her breasts, removes his hands, and
says, "Madam, you are 50."
Stunned and amazed, the woman says, "That was incredible, how could you
tell?"
The old man says, "Promise you won't get mad?"
"I promise I won't." she says.
"I was behind you in line at McDonald's."

Sounds like John's experience with the Alimta is the same as mine. After the 2nd treatment, results of CT were stable and then the big improvements were a 30% shrinkage after the 4th one so he might want to hang in there after the 2nd if improvement isn' noted.
Good Luck with it John.

Yes Don, I had the same side effects with Alimta. It got so bad that it was difficult to drive. It soon subsided when I went off it.

Sue and Mike,

Teri,
Great to hear from you and that you are home and able to post. I had Gemzar initially and then with the Clinical Trial and it worked both times. It stopped my pleural effusion when I first started Chemo and it has not come back to any significant amount. Pray that you have good luck with it too.
Hang tough my friend. God Bless. Praying for you.
