  1. Sally,

Hang in there. Don't worry about tomorrow. Take it one day at a time. I lost my brother in 1999 and my mother in 2000 both to lung cancer. I was diagnosed in 3/2003 and had a lung removed. My first thought was that my life was over. They removed the lung and tell me that all the cancer is gone. I know it might return but until if and when it does, I am not going to worry about tomorrow. I am going to enjoy today. God does not put us in the valley just to be doing it. It is in the valley that we learn and grow. If we stayed on the mountain top all the time, we would be looking down and not up. When we are in the valley we tend to look up. Good luck and please keep us posted. I will keep you in my Prayers.

  2. I did not have any fluid involved so therefore my situation may be slightly different than yours. I had chemo and radiation at the same time and did not have any side effects to speak of. I did get tired some but I did that before treatment so I can't say that was really a side effect. The treatments were given in hopes of shrinking 7cm tumer. It shrunk to 1 cm and then I was able to have my surgery. Good Luck.

  3. Cheryl,

I can not say anything that the others have not said already. I too dreaded my surgery before the date came. But my doctor talked me through my fear. You will do fine once you get there. Keep that pillow by your side and don't hesitate to use your morphine or ask for your pain medicine if you don't have the morphine tube. The road ahead of you is not an easy one but there are a lot of Prayers going up on your behalf so you will be fine. Will be looking forward on an update for you. Good Luck. You will be in my Prayers.

  4. My tumor was 7 cm. It started out inoperable because of location. I took 25 radiation and 5 chemo to shrink it. It shrunk to 2 cm so therfore I had surgery to remove the whole lung. All 4 of my doctors were remarkably pleased with the results of the shrinkage. The report came back that all the cancer was gotten out. Hang in there and keep us posted. You will be in my prayers.

  5. I don't know if removal of one lung makes you eligable or not. The website is www.ssa.gov. I do know there is a 5 month waiting period if you qualify. Benifits begin on 6th month. Welcome to the site and please register and let us know how your surgery goes. Good Luck.

  6. Does anyone know how long it takes to get SS started. I know there is 5 month wait period. I signed up this past week. I only have about 2 months left on my short term at work. My employer is wanting me back part time now. Guess my question is how long will it be before I go hearing something from SS. Thanks for your imput.

  7. I had the same problem during radiation except the hair loss. I did not loose any hair. The mouthwash seemed to help and I had to force it down. Man that taste!!! I got GI Coctail during hosp stay after surgery and that did wonders for me. At home I tried baby food since I had no blender to puree my own. Hope this helps.

  8. I have not saw or heard any pecentage of survival at given intervals. I was thinking it was 5 years to return. I am scheduled for c scan in October (4 mo after surgery). I was never told what stage I was in. My Onc said at least stage 2...might be 3...could even be 4. He just never would say except as of date of surgery, it had not met anywhere else.

    Will be praying for all.

  9. I had one lung removed on June 17, 2003. Prior to that I had 6 Chemo treatments and 25 Radiation Treatments. The Dr's told me after the surgery they were surprised to my response to treatment. I saw my Radiation Dr Monday and he said that my other doctors along wit hisself were remarkablely pleased. They said what they had set out to accomplish was accomplished. He released me. I saw surgeon today and he told me he was extremily pleased. He gave me clearance to return to work. Reports say ALL cancer was removed. I hope I am not sounding like I am bragging or anything but just wanted everyone to know there is HOPE for this monster disease. I know it can return on me but I will not even think about that till if and when it does. I will be praying for each and every one of you and ask that you do the same for me.

  10. I smoked 2 packs a day for 35 years. Everytime I tried nothing helped. I did not want to quit. I went to doctor for reg checkup and told him I wanted some welbutrin(cheaper zyban). It did work. I did not want a cig but smoked about 4 per day for a week. The craving was gone...the 1st day. About a week later, he called me to come in. When he put last years x-ray beside this years x-ray...guess what. Those 4 per day went bye-bye. No more cigs. All it took was me seeing x rays (which was 2 late). NSCLC.

  11. Shelly,

The Quilt saonds like a GREAT IDEA. Wish I had thought of it about 2 years ago when my mom died. Another idea if there are any brothers or sisters....make small lap blankets to use when in recliner and therefore have enough old clothes so each one can have a throw. What a wonderful memory to have.

God Bless and will be praying for all of us.

  12. I too am having this type of pain. When I lay down it seems to ease up some. I then take a Loritab and it will go away for bout 2 hours. My Onc has refered me to Pain Manag but cant get in for 4 weeks. I have been looking for info on this pain. Has anyone else experianced this?

Judy, does short of breath go with this pain. My Onc has not been helpful with this. My Pulmanory Dr said it was JUNK left over from radiation. I was wondering if it was radiation pneumantis until Onc said Post Thoracic Pain. Would like to hear from anyone that has experienced this. Does it go away or do we just take pain med for it?

  13. Thanks everyone for the replies. Norme, I never thought of it the way you put it. Guess I was only acting scared for a while. Other than being short of breath and sore I am doing good. I have moments that I feel like the short of breath is coming from my radiation. I was told that it was a side effect. I have been off radiation now for little over 10 weeks and that is what scares me...that it is not from radiation. My pul dr said could be scar tissue which never goes away. One good note is I see my onc and radiation doctor the 24th and plan on asking about this.

Once again, thank you all for being such a caring group of people. God Bless each of you.

  14. I think I possibly have it. Sience my surgery to remove lung in June, I have had some minor problems ( or at least I think so). My pulmanry doctor says he feels like my right lung has some junk left over from radiation. The ER doctor admitted me for pneumonia but pul dr said again he felt like radiation junk and not pneumonia. I do have some short of breath but am not sure if something like radiation caused it or not. That is why I was wondering. Thanks for the reply and God Bless.

  15. Very Well said Shannon. I know that if God was ever in anything in my life it was my surgery. Many Prayers went up on my behalf and many were answered. May God Bless you all.

Come as often as you like and share with us or cry and let us cry with you. Either way you will learn about this killer disease and find comfort at the same time.

  17. Sorry about the loss of Chris. I can tell how close you and him must have been. The healing process takes time. Remember, God nevers puts more on us than we can handle. I will continue to remember you in my Prayers.

  18. Sounds like you have really been blessed this week. I too am having short breath after radiation in May-June. Dr tells me it should go away as a side effect but I see no signs of it soon. Really the only side effect I've had tho. Had entire lung removed in June and Dr still tells me SOB is side effect of radiation and not lung removal.

Good Luck and remember God never puts more on us than we can handle.
