  1. Dave,

Some golf, some baby holding, some family, some friends, some HOPE. Sounds like a great day to me. Happy Easter to you and yours and all our compatriots on the Message Board. Blessings.

  2. Ni,

I would suggest getting in touch with the local Hospice ASAP!! They can do wonders in controlling the pain, giving help with how to care for dad at home, how to keep him comfortable, providing someone to come in and help with bathing, etc. They helped us tremendously to honor our dad's and mom's wishes to pass the last days of their lives in their own home.

Your doctor or hospital social worker can tell you more about hospice and help you locate help in your area. Other resources:

This is a terrible time for you. Thinking of you and saying a prayer for strength and grace.

  3. Junior-

It's been said before on the board, and I just want to restate, that we never need to apologize for venting when we come here...this is the perfect place to let emotions loose--GOOD emotions and BAD emotions. 8)

Thanks for letting us know about your dad. He is certainly having a bumpy ride. I'm hoping things smooth out for him and that he gets to continue with his current chemo, or maybe even something better. Hang in.

  4. Andrew Weil is an M.D. according to the jacket of my cookbook The Healthy Kitchen by Andrew Weil, M.D. and Rosie Daley, Knopf, 2002. This book is fun to read even if you don't make any of the yummy recipes. Interspersed throughout the book are short discussions of interest such as "Are Eggs Good for You?", "Sugar and Other Sweeteners", "Cooking Mushrooms", etc., etc.

To piggyback on John's information, under "Cooking Mushrooms" Dr. Weil mentions several varieties of mushrooms that have been studied for their immune-enhancing effects, including maitake (the best-studied species) shiitakes, oyster, morels, chanterelles and porcinis.

The following advice from the book was news to me:

I always stress the importance of cooking mushrooms thoroughly....Mushrooms often contain chemical compounds that either interfere with digestive enymes or block absorption of nutrients. In addition, even many edible species contain natural toxins. These problems all have a common solution: heat. Sufficient cooking breaks down the tough cell walls, inactivates the antidigestive elements, and destroys many toxins....I strongly advise against eating any mushrooms raw, whether wild or cultivated.

I've stopped putting raw mushrooms in my salads.

  5. Some time ago someone on the board indicated that they were suppliers (?) of Noni juice and cautioned to only use the "Morinda" type. Be sure to compare the labels of the two products. I have purchased the more expensive type from a natural food store and the label proclaimed:

    •no fumigation

    •no pesticides

    •no GMOs

    •no irradiation

    •no preservatives

    •guaranteed fresh

    •no rotten or fermented Noni

If the cheaper one doesn't list such precautions, I might be sceptical. Sometimes you do get what you pay for.

Going to the top of this page and doing a SEARCH for "Noni" will bring up several other mentions of Noni Juice; most of them are under the Alternative Therapies Forum.

  6. Estelle-

Goody, goody, gumdrops! The news sounds MOST promising and you sound upbeat about your treatment...that can ONLY help! Will keep the prayers coming!

  7. rayroy,

My CT scan reports are usually available on the third working day after having been taken. I go into the oncologist's office and ask for a copy to read before I go to see the doctor, because I don't want there to be any big surprises and me sitting there terrified and trying to decide about options and treatments, etc., when I might have just been "blindsided" with something. The nurse always looks them over first and will explain anything she feels needs it. I know others don't care to know until the last minute...it's a personal choice. It usually takes my PET scan reports a bit longer to get processed and over to the onc's office--I just ask when they think they will be ready. Again, I like to know the lay-of-the-land before going in to the appointment. Saying a prayer for the best results possible for your dad.

  8. Carleen,

Welcome to a place of much caring and solice. This is a safe site to ask questions, vent, praise, encourage, cry virtually, etc. I'm glad you have conferred with more than one doctor and institution...it is just a LOT to absorb all at once. I was in a total fog for about 2 months and wish I had been connected here. Remember the tape recorder, notepad with questions, and please be sure to request a copy of ALL scan reports, path reports, AND each doctor's Chart Notes after a visit (I wait a couple of days for them to be transcribed, then I go pick up my copy...the doctors will usually look them over first to see if they have written anything they feel needs additional explanation, but it is your RIGHT to see them and have copies). Start a 3-ring binder for all of this information. It's a good idea to have a section for bills, insurance, etc., as you never know when you might need this info down the road. Someone on the board even has copies (or maybe the originals????) of all their scans. When I have needed scans all gathered together (i.e., second opinion at another hospital), I have just run around and collected them. I'll be praying for your young family. Blessings.

  9. CamperJones,

The joy and love you feel for your mother are palpable. Your positive approach to enjoying and supporting her must surely be of help and comfort to her. I'll be praying for you.

  10. Dear Ni,

These guys' responses are down-to-earth and heartfelt...I just want you to know that I'm thinking of you and mom and dad and praying that your love and strength will guide you in the path you need. Sounds as if mom REALLY does need you, perhaps as much as dad. Don't depend on the doctor's "timeline" too much....we never know when our time here is up, but you will want to feel good about yourself and memories when your finally face your father's mortality. Take good care of yourself, too.
