  1. Dear Faylene,

Of course your mom is in my prayers. You are sounding as "OK" as could possibly be expected...hang on to that positive mind-set and try to enjoy something every day with your mom.

  2. Marlon,

Yippee Skippee! It feels soooooo good to have the tube out! :D

Your mom's journey has certainly been arduous and would be an inspiring story for many lung cancer patients and survivors. I hope part of the article will include your relentless research, your tenacious pursuit for the best care for her, and your constant support as a loving son. My best to you and mom.

  3. Dear Candy and Hubby,

I know you are heartsick with the reality of this miserable disease. I'm welcoming you and encouraging you to post often as a way of helping you cope. We want to be here to help you with information and concerns and milestones. Remember to take care of yourself, too. Prayers will be coming your way.

  4. Hi Joe,

So sorry to hear of all your troubles...what an emotional and physical Ferris wheel you have been spinning around on! I'm glad you found this site, even though I wish you had no need to.

Since no chemo or radiation is being recommended for you, and you were able to have surgery, your cancer must be in the Early Stages. If the cancer has metastasized to other sites (i.e., mets), they usually will not operate because the odds of it simply continuing to spread are just too great. If you have to have lung cancer (UGH!), then being diagnosed early and being able to have surgery are considered distinct advantages as that condition has the greatest chance of "cure" or long-term non-recurrence. You were lucky your GP encouraged you to follow up, but very unlucky in all the extra crap that followed your first lobectomy...BUT YOU ARE STILL HERE :!: Yeaaaah!! :D

After my lobectomy I felt like things were sloshing around in there. That feeling has disappeared after a year, but where the nerves were cut still feels weird. The incision is in the back, but I am still exquisitely sensitive in the front under my breast and there are intermittent strange sensations in my armpit that were never there before...go figure. My point here is that things get better, but, as Dave G. said, some new quirks may never disappear, and what each of us experiences can be quite different.

Glad that you are home and hope that you are feeling better each day.

  5. Dear Connie B,

Good for you for going for the CT over the CXR...what would that Dr. want if HE were in your shoes??!!! You are on the calendar for extra-strong prayers on Friday for continued good news. Blessings.

  6. I couldn't wait, so I went to the oncologist's office this morning and got a copy of the report of the CT chest scan done last Friday. The hazy density in the RML remained unchanged and was termed consistent with "scarring". :D (Let's hear it for scars: Hooray!)

As I type I'm celebrating with a dish of Häagen-Dazs topped with sliced bananas and Cabernet Chocolate sauce!

  7. Bess,

Thanks for sharing your story and for taking the plunge to post. I hope you find the same sense of love and belonging that I do whenever I visit this message board. I'll be praying for you along with all the rest of us. Blessings.

  8. Dear Barbara,

So glad that you are posting. Yes, we all need love and support! "Friendships multiply the joy and divide the grief!" I'm sorry I don't have specific knowledge to help with your questions, but wanted you to know I will be pulling for you and keeping you in my prayers. Also, thank you for the laugh about "...hair we go again!" You still have your sense of humor!

    Bless you.

  9. John,

Thanks bunches for the Dr. Henschke article! As I've noted elsewhere, I am a real fan of hers because her work is so sound scientifically and yet her writing always conveys to me those human elements of empathy and social concern too.

I hope you'll post the second part of the article when it is available???

    Smiles, :D

  10. Karma,

GREAT letter! I especially liked the last paragraph about continuing to donate and support the causes of breast and ovarian cancer...kept the letter from sounding like "sour grapes" and put you and LC in a positive and generous light. (I'm afraid my letters didn't come off that way because I was mad as hops when I wrote them...wasn't feeling particulary generous. Oh, well....).

    Thanks for sharing.

  11. Diana,

How wonderful to read that you are making forward-looking plans and that you have gleaned some help from these forums. Hope the change in meds will be extra beneficial :) Take care.

  12. John,

I'm with you on this one. I think the medical position on using CT scans for lung cancer screening is a bunch of hogwash to obfuscate the stigma issue. I get a mammogram every year, have my teeth X-rayed, etc., etc. Your points about waiting and doing another comparison scan are certainly valid, because that is PRECISELY what they do with many of us LC survivors right now!!! What's the difference, except that many, many more people could be helped earlier??? I know, I know, I'm preaching to the choir here  Always enjoy your research and points of view.

  13. Dave,

That is a GREAT letter. Do I have your permission to copy it and forward it to the Revlon lady? Or have you already done so??? I especially like the boycott part.

  14. Dear Confused,

Yup, this old lung cancer is bitchy business. My LC was accidently identified earlier than your mom's, but I too am a total non-smoker, exercised very regularly, maintained a healthy weight, had all my mammograms, pap smears, a colonoscopy at the appropriate age, bone-density scans, blah, blah, blah. Made no difference because there was never any kind of screening done for LC...What a shock to learn that lung cancer can happen to anybody, any age, any lifestyle, etc. It is no respecter of norms. That said, it sounds as if you guys are on the right track with positive expectations, looking into clinical trials at M.D., etc. Sorry to welcome you here, but this is an exceptional support system. Please continue to visit and keep us updated. Saying a prayer for your mom.

  15. Mike and Shannon,

Praying for you as you make your pilgrimage to Mayo. The 50's restaurant sounds like a cool stop to make and enjoy. Hold on to each other tightly and trust in the Lord's grace.
