  1. Karen,

I do not know about trials. Each trial is different, and the requirements are different. If there is a trial going on now you are interested in you should find out what the requirements are for that trial, before you start a new drug. My onc knew that I had to go through required treatments before I could go into the Iressa trial. The Iressa trial had been running quite a while before I was put on it. I was only on the trial 3 months and the FDA approved the drug.

Yes you can go off of it. For some people the side effects are quite bad. I know Snowflake had lots of trouble with the side effects and had to go off the drug. She has a post somewhere about her side effects. I also have known of others but I do not know if they have posted. My onc said that some times when you go off a drug and then go back the side effects can be worse. He has told me I'll be on it until something changes.

    Hope this helps.

  2. Congratulations David.

I was like you I started early. When I was 15 I was smoking Camel, & Lucky Strikes. When I could not afford cigarettes, I rolled my own. I Quit Six years ago on Rochelle's birthday. It was a present to both of us. Also note Jillian was conceived right about the same time, give or take a few days. So we were rewarded in many ways.

For those of you that have not quit. Keep on quitting. I know I tried, it seems well over a 100 times from the time I started. I smoked 32 years. I remember trying to quit in High School. I said then "Oh I can quit any time." I knew I was wrong even then. If anybody needs information on how I quit PM me.

When I was on chemo treatments my sense of smell was really heighted. I could smell that crap coming from cars traveling ahead of me on the expressway. I still do not like the smell at all. I have to hold my breath when I pass a group of people smoking out front of a building. It makes me cough.

When I see young people smoke, I always think boy if you knew what I have and been going through you would spit that thing out of your mouth.

I feel really bad that my selfishness, very well could have brought this horrible disease to my family.

Keep up the great work David.

  3. Bill Gates and General Motors

Bill Gates is hanging out with the chairman of General Motors.

"If automotive technology had kept pace with computer technology over the past few decades," boasts Gates, "you would now be driving a V-32 instead of a V-8, and it would have a top speed of 10,000 miles per hour. Or, you could have an economy car that weighs 30 pounds and gets a thousand miles to a gallon of gas. In either case, the sticker price of a new car would be less than $50."

"Sure," says the GM chairman. "But would you really want to drive a car that crashes four times a day?"

  4. Lea,

I have been on Iressa for one year. I started it after I had gone through chemo/radiation and chemo alone. I started it when it was still in clinical trial. It was a requirement to have gone through all the above treatments to get in the trial.

Iressa has been very good for me. I have some rash but not too bad. My bowels go through the full range and changes sometimes daily. My hands are very dry and the skin splits. I have been using a lotion that is a moisturizer. It helps quite a bit. My face is red, the bumps are not too bad. They are the worst in my hair. Everyone seems to react differently to the Iressa. Some people have to stop taking it.

I have had some shrinkage over the last year and nothing new on my last PET scan.

Good luck with your decision. I hope I was of some help.

  5. He has long term insurance. SSD will cover him 6 months from dx.

He will probably lose his job at some point, read the company handbook carefully. When he goes on the SSD the long term disabililty will be reduced by the amount he is getting from Social Security (at least mine was).

It is up to his company if he stays with them and is insured. You need to check with your medical insurance company about adding him and read the policy. No, getting SSD will not change insurance with his company. It is up to his company as to when he is terminated.

    Good luck John.

  6. A lawyer finds a lamp on the beach. He rubs it and of course a genie pops out. The genie says he will grant him three wishes. The only catch is what ever you wish for all lawyers in the world will get double of what ever you wish for. The lawyer says ok.

His first wish is for a Porsche. The genie grants him his wish and all lawyers in the world get two Porsche.

His second wish is for a million dollars. The genie grants him his money

and every lawyer in the world gets two million dollars.

The genie asks what is your last wish? The lawyer says I have always wanted to donate a kidney.

  7. Blind Bunny, Meet Blind Snake

One morning a blind bunny was hopping down the bunny trail, and he tripped over a large snake and fell, KerPlop!, right on his twitchy little nose. "Oh, please excuse me!" said the bunny. "I didn't mean to trip over you, but I'm blind and can't see."

"That's perfectly all right," replied the snake. "To be sure, it was my fault. I didn't mean to trip you, but I'm blind too, and I didn't see you coming. By the way, what kind of animal are you?"

"Well, I really don't know," said the bunny. "I'm blind, and I've never seen myself. Maybe you could examine me and find out."

So the snake felt the bunny all over, and he said, "Well, you're soft, and cuddly, and you have long silky ears, and a little fluffy tail and a dear twitchy little nose... You must be a bunny rabbit!"

Then he said, "I can't thank you enough, but by the way, what kind of animal are you?"

And the snake replied that he didn't know, and the bunny agreed to examine him, and when he was finished, the snake said, "Well, what kind of an animal am I?"

So the bunny felt the snake all over, and he replied, "You're hard, you're cold, you're slimy and you haven't got any balls... You must be a lawyer."

  8. The United Way realized that it had never received a donation from the

city's most successful lawyer. So a United Way volunteer paid the lawyer

a visit in his expensive office.

The volunteer opened the meeting by saying, "Our research shows that even

though your annual income is over a million dollars, you don't give a penny

to charity. Wouldn't you like to give something back to your community

    through the United Way?"

The lawyer thinks for a minute and says, "First, did your research also show

you that my mother is dying after a long, painful illness and she has huge

medical bills that are far beyond her ability to pay?"

Embarrassed, the United Way rep mumbles, "Uh... no, I didn't know that."

"Secondly," says the lawyer, "my brother, a disabled veteran, is blind and

confined to a wheelchair and is unable to support his wife and six children."

The stricken United Way rep begins to stammer an apology, but is cut off again.

"Thirdly, did your research also show you that my sister's husband died in a

dreadful car accident, leaving her penniless with a mortgage and three children?"

The humiliated United Way rep, completely beaten, says, "I'm sorry, I had no idea."

And the lawyer says, "So... if I don't give money to them, what makes you

think I would ever give any to you!"

  9. June,

I agree with all the above. I can only tell you what my symptoms are. I started Iressa one year ago, after about two weeks off chemo. I have regained some of my energy. My energy is still quite a bit lower than before dx, but is higher than during chemo/radiation and straight chemo. I have all the other synptoms your dad has. The numbness in my feet started a few years before my dx. It was caused by high sugar levels. I have type 2 diabetes. Also one of the chemos cause it to worsen. So, I cannot say whether or not Iressa has contributed to it. I also have some rash and very dry skin on my face and hands. My appetite still remains low, but my weight remains good. My bowels cover the entire spectrum. Good luck with Iressa. It has shrunk my tumors and is the best chemo I have dealt with.

  10. Ok, I give up on the blond jokes.

Now I am on to lawyer jokes, since Andrea is gone on vacation.

    A Lawyer and A Politician

What do you get when you cross a corrupt lawyer with a crooked politician?

    Chelsea Clinton.

  11. Blonde - Elmo Factory

Once there was a blonde who really needed some money. She saw an ad in the newspaper for a job at an Elmo factory. She went down and applied, but the manager told her that she wouldn't want the job because it was so boring. The blonde begged him and told him she would do anything because she needed the money really bad. After long consideration the manager hired her.

After a few hours the manager looked at the video-monitor showing the factory floor and saw that the conveyer belt was backed up. The manager went downstairs to find out what the problem was. When he arived there the blonde was sewing to marbles into the crotch of every Elmo.

The manager said, ''I said to give each Elmo two test tickles; not two testicles!''

Take an Elmo to the Testicle Festival.

  12. Three blondes were walking through the desert when they found a magic genie's lamp.

After rubbing the lamp to make the genie appear, he said, "I will grant three wishes, one for each of you."

The first said, "I wish I were smarter."

    So, she became a redhead.

The second blonde said, "I wish I were smarter than she is."

    She became a brunette.

The third blond ordered, "I wish I were smarter than both of them!"

    So, she became a man.

  13. When I was on steroids my blood sugar went up over 200. I was dx with type 2 Diabetes several years ago. Sweating was one of my symptoms. Also neuropathy of my feet. Maybe your brother should have his blood sugar checked.

  14. Nushka,

I had trouble last year with coughing. I was told by someone that swallowing during scans will prevent you from coughing. During the day I chew gum, which keeps me swallowing slavia, which washes away what ever is making me cough. During the night I use phenergan with codeine. It not only helped the cough, but it helped me sleep at night. When my cough was real bad I kept the cough syrup by my bed. It is only good for 4 hours.

    Take care John.

  15. Fay,

I had the whole banana. They radiated the right lung and mediastinum along with cabo/taxol. The tumor in the mediastinum was the most life threating. I was told near the end that I was considered an emergeny case.

It was causing and still does put pressure on the vena cava. I am not sure but I believe this caused the most damage to the cancer in both areas. With the whole banana there is a point where they have to stop if you want to be evaluated for surgery. This is based on the number of rads you have had. Once you have the maximum number of rads, the area will not heal for surgery. They continued radiation on me because surgery was not an option.

I now have slight heart damage. I have mitral valve prolapse(leaking valve). Also a small amount of fluid around the heart.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Side effects were a sore throat, fatigue and in my case a perrmanent loss of hair to that area. For some people that can be a good thing. :P

  16. Stephanie,

I can tell by your post your mom was a wonderful person. It would take a great person to raise someone to write such great things about their mother. You and your mother’s love for each other will help to carry you through this rough time. I am sure you have lots of fond memories to also carry you through.

Take care of your self and family. John M.
