bookah212
Hello everyone. I am new here. I was directed by a friend on an unrelated site. I am actually here to support my sister. She is three years younger than me and possibly facing lung cancer. Our mother died of breast cancer after a 6 year battle in 2001 and our dad had a rare form of extramedullary (spinal) cancer that spread to his lungs. My sister is 26 and after a bout of mono had a CT scan in September. The scan showed a 5mm nodule on her left lung. They did a follow up scan in January that showed it had grown to 7mm. She saw a pulmonary specialist that ordered an MRI (her insurance wouldn't pay for a PET). The MRI showed two small spots on her spine. She also has enlarged lymph nodes so last Friday her lung surgeon scheduled a surgery for tomorrow. It will either be VATS or an open lung biopsy depending what he can get at with the scope. Just wondering if anyone had any advice or suggestions. Thank you so much!
recce101
Hi, and welcome to the LCSC. When you get a chance, you should start a chronological "profile" of your sister's initial symptoms, her diagnosis as determined from tomorrow's surgery, and later her planned follow-up treatment (chemo and/or radiation) and side-effects/response to treatment. Click the "My Profile" link at the top, scroll down to the "Signature" block to enter/update your information, and ensure "Always attach my signature" is marked "Yes." This will save you a lot of repetitive typing each time you post a question or comment. Best wishes to your sister for a successful and uneventful surgery. Let us know how it went as soon as details are available. Aloha, Ned

2weimies
Glad you found the site and hopefully you will get alot of support and answers here ( as I have ). I am hoping the bout of mono is what caused your sisters nodule to appear and that they will do the less invasive VATS procedure and she will have a fast and smooth recovery. I will be thinking of her and you today. Please post an update as soon as you hear. Hugs to you ~Maven
bookah212
Well, they wheeled her into surgery an hour ago. I am supposed to have an update within the hour. I wish I could be there but I am still recovering from my hysterectomy and I just started working from home. To top it all off my 10 month old woke up in the middle of the night with a 102 degree fever so I don't think it would be in my sister's best interest to visit her tomorrow as I had planned. I will keep you all updated. Thank you.

bookah212
Well, I just got good news. They were able to take it with the scope. It looks to be a calcium deposit but it will still be sent to pathology and she should be able to come home tomorrow. I'll let you know if anything else comes up and thank you for your support. Please send her our best wishes and you take care too.Is there anyone to help you with your baby being sick right now? I know after my hysterectomy I was not in any shape to take care of myself let alone a 10 month old. You are remarkable!! Hugs~ Mave

recce101
Wow, that's terrific!! The enlarged lymph nodes turned out to be of no concern either? We could use more stories like yours! Aloha, Ned
Welthy
Wow -- sounds like good news for your sister! I always believe that the surgeons know what it is when they see it -- prayers for pathology to confirm calcium deposits. Take a deep breath and take care of yourself and your baby now. You sure sound like you need a break! Best of luck, Welthy
Don M
Whew! I am glad to hear the good news about your sister. I would have gotten the biopsy posthaste if were me. Now she has to monitor the spine spots? I guess the lymph nodes must have checked out ok. Don M
bookah212
Since the lymph nodes are in the groin area and the nodules look good they are attributing the lymph enlargment to the mono she suffered in the fall. They are going to do CT every 3 months to check the spine and I told her she HAD to get a mammogram. With our mother's history and the fact that my sis had a lump that was too small to remove 4 years ago she still needs to be cautious. I had the BRCA1 and 2 test done before my c-section in May and turned up negative for both but urged her to have the same test done. It is supposed to be way cheaper for her now that they have my DNA on file. I will keep all of you in my prayers and if I have any new news will post it here. You have been a great source of comfort during this stressful time. I had not being able to be there with her
