  1. Paula,

    If I were you....

You mentioned having bronchitis and now suspect allergies. And you mention that you use an inhaler only when you have bronchitis flares...

You have a pulmonary function test to see what your pulmonary function is  so that the doctors can better treatment plan your cancer and how they will proceed.. (that would be one of the reasons, anyway). If you do not yet have a pulmonologist, get one. If you have an allergist/immunologist, use him/her. If you do not have either of these docs, then use your primary doc to get permission to use an inhaler or inhalers to get your lungs in the best possible shape that they can be.

It is my understanding that you are a lucky candidate for surgery. You will need all the help you can get. If you will be having this test done by a pulmonologist, then that doc will be able to guide you with the treatment that will give you the optimal success. Based on your med history and your PFT, this doctor may prescribe oral medications, including antihistamines or steroids to reduce the inflammation in your airways. If there is an infection, then antibiotics, of course. You would be given inhalers to use as needed or on a daily basis.

I would try to get a jump on it now by visiting my PCP or specialist... to see exactly what they would recommend.

I hope that this makes sense to you.

Good luck! And keep asking questions!

(You may not get the right answers, :? but keep asking anyway)

  2. okay, Curtis,

my pencil is all chewed up...I got teeth marks all over it and the eraser is half chewed off and spit out...

If I were the last "guy" on the flight, I would sqirm ahead of someone who is busy putting their carry on luggage in the overhead. Then I wouldn't have to think about probabilities......

    Is that the right answer?

Or should I have picked up that guy's boarding pass and used his seat?

What if his seat was next to the toidies? I wouldn't want to sit there!

    Is that the right answer?

    I'm sure I got lead poisoning now....dangit.

  3. Okay, Curtis..

    I am still like......huh?

I mean I am still trying to figure out why in the world I would be the last guy on the flight....I am always just about first in line.

And why would some guy drop his boarding pass and still be able to get on the flight?

And, where are we going anyway?

And is the lounge open? Is there bar service? And who is going to be serving me. That's all I am saying.....I am still working out the details, that's all...

  4. Thanks..

    TeeTaa,

I regret that I have not seen Jay for awhile. He lives over 200 miles away. I did get an invitation to witness his baptism coming up at the end of the month, which I plan to attend. Jay has not done well through all of this. It is my sorrow.

  5. Hello Patrice

I lurked for awhile too before I could figure out how to log in and all. Glad you posted and so glad to hear of your success! Welcome in a big way. You might want to report in at the Welcome Newcomers forum. A lot of people don't get over here regularly, but all of us would give you a huge welcome over there!!! Be sure to do that, now.

Hope to see a lot more of your posts and now that you are seasoned, you can probably help all of us too.

  7. If I remember correctly, I think that Maria Shriver authored a children's book about cancer.

Your doctor will know about whether to withdraw your mom from the decadron or not. There is a formula for it, depending on the dose and the length of time a person is on it. If is for a short period of time then it is no problem in most cases to stop abruptly. Over a longer time period, then the doctor will prescribe a taper. All doctors know about this. So don't worry.

  9. Thanks Elaine for welcoming me to the board and for taking an interest in me. You don't even know me and yet you were willing to take time out to help me along. Thanks... (and thanks for all the creativity in the just for laughs column...you had me screaming a couple times with your "Frank" stuff) Congratulations and thanks for being here.

  10. Hi Elaine..

Wish I had some words of wisdom for you here. However, if I gave you any advice, then that means that I would be talking out my a**...I am in exactly the same spot you are in...actually, you are one step ahead of me. I "fired" that bad doc and now I have to find a new one and I just dread changing horses in the middle of this fast moving stream...

All I can say is, "I know zactly what you are going through"
