  1. Good afternoon, everyone!

It was 35 degrees when I got up this morning. Forecast high is 67. I took off from home first thing and rode 68 miles. Then, after I got home, I gave the yard its last mowing of the year. Then, I got tackle and boat stuff ready for tomorrow. I must be feeling better if I had that much energy....LOL.

Libby, pedaling a bicycle will do a pretty good job of keeping you warm on a cool day, and you don't need to wear nearly as much as if you were just standing around. Enjoy your weekend at the cottage. Judy, I hope you're getting lined out on your sleeping now.

    Have a great weekend, all!

  2. Good morning, everyone! TGIF!

It was 34 degrees as I rode to work this morning. I wore my jacket and balaclava for the first time this fall. Forecast high is 64.

Ann, I'm glad your nearby gunman situation didn't turn into as big a disaster as it could have.

I got an email from Bernie Mack, from KLUV radio, yesterday. He's one of two lung cancer survivors at KLUV, which is giving some great media coverage to this year's DFW Walk for LUNGevity. He wants to interview me next week on his morning radio show.

It's a little more than six hours until I'm off for the weekend. Have a great day, all!

  3. Good afternoon, everyone!

The forum logged me out, wouldn't let me log in, and wouldn't send me a password. I had to get Katie to do a rescue so I could log in again.

It was 50 degrees as I rode to work this morning. Forecast high was 67, but it's plain that we're not going to make that. The howling north wind will be a good tailwind on the ride home. My bronchitis seems improved today. I can breathe without sounding like I'm snoring.

I hope you get your sleep lined out soon, Judy. If you can do that, I would think that just taking a pill at home would be a nice change from the regular chemo you've been doing.

    Have a great day, all!

  4. Sorry you're going through this, Judy. When we say for better or worse, sometimes we don't know just how worse the worse will get.

If you don't want to air out every detail here, I understand, but we all sure do want to hear from you, whether it's good or bad news. Here's hoping the appointment went well today.

  5. Good morning, everyone!

It was 51 degrees when I got up this morning. Forecast high is 65. It was still pouring rain this morning, so I drove to work again. It's supposed to be dry the rest of the week, so maybe I'll get a couple of rides in.

I vote for attending the graduation too, Eric. I do sound like a doctor when I talk about bronchitis, don't I? LOL. You tend to learn a lot about something like that when it's been as big a problem as it has for me. It started when I was just a couple of years old, at Camp Lejeune, which is why my sister's suspicions were raised when they later found all the polluted water supplies there.

    Have a great day, all!

  6. Annette, sorry to hear there's another bronchitis sufferer here. It's sure no fun.

If you check the ingredients of Mucinex D, you'll see the main ingredient is guaifenesin. It's other ingredient is pseudoephedrine. Pseudoephedrine helps clear the airways by constricting blood vessels in nasal passages. Unfortunately for me, it also constricts prostate blood vessels, having the same effect that too much caffeine has on me, that is, making me stand over the toilet for much longer than I'd like. (Is that a visual that no one needed?) So, I skip the pseudoephedrine and just buy plain guaifenesin.

The last prescription I was given for bronchitis was GFN-DM-PSE, which adds a cough suppressant to the guaifenesin and pseudoephedrine. I never did quite understand a drug that contains an expectorant to make you cough and a cough suppressant to keep you from coughing, but maybe that's why I'm not a doctor.

    I hope you're better soon.

EDIT: Oops, after typing all that, I noticed that you're taking Mucinex DM, not Mucinex D. Mucinex DM skips the pseudoephedrine and just combines the expectorant with the cough suppressant........LOL. If it works for you, I guess that's all that matters.

  7. Good morning, everyone!

It was 53 degrees when I got up this morning. Forecast high is 62. Rain is supposed to move in this afternoon, so I drove to work.

Judy, sorry you're having to deal with the side effects of Tarceva, but they say the rash means that it's working, so I'm thinking that's a good thing.

Judy and Libby, there is nothing doctors can do for bronchitis, other than giving the guaifenesin that I'm already taking. You don't need a prescription for that, and it helping you rid yourself of the phlegm is the only cure. Some doctors will give antibiotics, but it does nothing to help the phlegm, so they'll give you more antibiotics when they see no results from the first, and you just end up with all the negative stuff that antibiotics cause.

I know more about bronchitis than I care to admit because, if you use wikipedia's definition that having bronchitis more than three months in a year makes it chronic, then I had chronic bronchitis for much of my childhood. For me, guaifenesin will usually clear it up in two or three weeks, though.

Of course, fluid that stays in your lungs for too long has a nasty habit of causing pneumonia. I know this because I've had pneumonia four times from lingering bronchitis. And then the antibiotics are needed. So, if mine stays around too long, I get a fever, or the phlegm becomes too exotic a color, I'll go to the doctor and listen to his surprised diagnosis of double pneumonia (they're always surprised because most people with double pneumonia aren't able to walk in like I do; it's a strange phenomenon, having the rest of your body strong and healthy while you have pneumonia).

Is that more than you ever wanted to know about bronchitis? Have a great day, all!

  8. Good morning, everyone!

It was 60 degrees as I rode to work this morning. It's actually cooler than that at 57 degrees now, as a cold front has come through. It's still supposed to get up to 78 degrees this afternoon.

There's not much else going on here other than wheezing and hacking. I hope you get a Tarceva schedule worked out that works for you soon, KW Judy. Sounds like you had a great trip, Eric.

    Have a great day, all!

  9. Good afternoon, everyone! Happy Halloween!

It was 48 degrees when I got up this morning. Forecast high is 85. Rose and I took off from home on our bikes this morning and rode 26 miles. It was my first ride since last Tuesday, and Rose's longest distance since she got back on the bike.

I went fishing yesterday. The cooler weather has started the fish moving, and I never found them, only boating 3 crappie. It was still nice to be out, though.

I'll end up with just 603 miles on the bike in October. It was already not a great mileage month, and being sick for the last week made it worse. That leaves me just over 1,000 miles to ride in the last two months of the year to reach my 7,500 mile goal. That will be tough to do if the weather gets bad.

I'm so glad Genetech came through for you, Judy. That's great news! Have a great day, all!

  10. Good morning, everyone! TGIF!

It was 36 degrees when I got up this morning. That's the coolest temperature we've had around here in a long time. Forecast high is 71.

I drove to work again. I'm slowly getting better. Maybe I'll ride Sunday. I had been starting my usual fall battle against weight gain, but for the past 5 days in a row, I've been below my target weight. I guess a really bad cold works well for weight loss, but I don't think I can recommend it.

Sounds like a fun day, Ann! It's a little more than six hours until I'll be off for the weekend. Have a great day, all!

  11. Welcome, smitty. I agree with the exercise recommendations. I was already a long distance cyclist when I was diagnosed, was back on the bike 16 days after surgery, and I think it really helped me a lot.

I'm almost three years from my surgery now, and have remained cancer free. Let's hope this second go-round is your last.

If it's the DFW Walk/Run for LUNGevity that you're attending, I'll be there, too. Best wishes and I'll look forward to seeing you there.

  12. Good morning, everyone!

It was 47 degrees when I got up this morning. Forecast high is 74. I'm working today, but I'm still feeling puny enough that I drove to work rather than riding.

KW Judy, that does seem crazy, as do some of the other rules. Rose's oncologist seemed to do a pretty good job of putting her in for all assistance she might qualify for. There was one grant we would have qualified for income-wise, but were disqualified because we own our home outright. That seemed a bit crazy to me, too.

Our retirement income will be low enough that we'll be worrying about all that plenty when we retire. What a healthcare system, huh!

    Have a great day, all!

  13. Good morning, everyone!

It was 52 degrees when I got up this morning. Forecast high is 83.

I did something this morning that I haven't done in a long time: I called in sick, and didn't go to work. This cold has really gotten me down. I'm going to sag back into my chair in front of the tv.

    Have a great day, all!

  14. Good morning, everyone!

I was 60 degrees as I rode to work this morning. Forecast high is 78. It looks like this front is causing some storms east of us, but it's just wind here. We'd had a good stretch without a lot of wind, so I'm getting reminded just how bad the wind can get here. I was riding against a south wind gusting to 35 mph on the way home yesterday afternoon. Then, the front blew in and I had 20 mph north winds to ride against this morning.

This early season nice weather cold I have has turned into my worst cold since my lung surgery. After three days of a nose run that no antihistamine could seem to phase, now I have congestion in my lungs.

The fruit flies are the bugs that are driving me nuts right now. I always bring fruit to work, and have to fight them when I get it out to eat. Eric, it's a small world. I used to always have a cigar going to keep mosquitos off when I fished, too. Doesn't seem like such a good plan now, does it?

    Have a great day, all!

  15. Good morning, everyone! It was 67 degrees as I rode to work this morning. Forecast high is 90. It's going to be a tough ride home against a south headwind gusting to 30 mph while not feeling well.

KW Judy, I'm with you. Even a tough fishing day is a lot better than my best days at work.

Lily, everyone around here is still amazed at the Rangers being in the World Series. In 50 years of existence, they've never done it before. The fact that it happened in a year when they went through bankruptcy and had to be sold makes it even more amazing. As well as they're playing right now, I wouldn't bet against them.

    Have a great day, all!

  16. Good morning, everyone!

It was 67 degrees when I got up this morning. Forecast high is 85.

I went fishing yesterday morning, but got a lot more rain than I bargained for. I kept taking shelter under a bridge as the storms would move in. It made for a tough day of fishing, but I brought a few home.

The sore throat I've had for the last few days seems to have turned into a full fledged cold, so I'm just going to stay home and take it easy today.

    Have a great day, all!

  17. Good morning, everyone! TGIF!

It was 67 degrees as I rode to work this morning. Forecast high is 80, with a 50 percent chance of rain. I hope it's not 50 percenting as I ride home. I rode to work all 5 days again this week.

It's a full moon right now, and the last two mornings, the moon has had a halo around it as I rode to work, from the thin clouds around it. It's looked like something right out of a werewolf movie. I didn't howl at the moon, though (not much, at least).

Judy, I never sleep in as late as 5:20, except on weekends, and sometimes not even then.....LOL. 6 1/2 hours and counting until I'm off work for the weekend. Have a great day, all!
