  1. Bill,

I had problems with my vein on the first IV of low dose chemo. My vein perforated and they had to give me 10 injections to counteract the chemo. By the next week I had a Port. Let me say get the lidocaine-prlocaine cream to numb the skin over the port. Oh especially for the first time it is used. My nurse if she had been in front of my foot would have been on the other side of the room. As it was my chair hit the wall behind me. It has been great ever since I got the cream. I get it flushed every 5-6 weeks if it has not been used.

The nice thing is the tube from it ends near my heart, so the chemo is diluted right away and pumped out to the cancer cells.

Lifting and swimming or getting it wet just after it is put in is not a good idea.

If you have any other questions feel free to ask.

  2. Jack Benny says thank you to all of you for all your kind words.

A hundred dollars plus a pill, Jack says I'll finish up the prescription. Besides Iressa has been very good to me. I am sure Tarceva will be the same if not better.

Four more days and I will be an official member of the Tarceva club.

Thanks again Jack Benny :P (John)

  4. Wow Eagles & Steelers both playing for titles. Way to go Pa. I was born in North central Pa. So I have to go for both teams. If it comes down(and it will) to both being in the Super Bowl, it would have to be the Steelers. Rochelle and I went to school in Northwest Pa. during Bradshaw, Lynn Swan, Franco Harris, and the steel curtain days. I am very familiar with Iron City Beer being the Steelers biggest backers.

    Go Steelers !!!! :D

  5. Grizzly Bear Warning

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game recently issued this bulletin...

"Warning: In light of the rising frequency of human/grizzly bear conflicts, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game is advising hikers, hunters and fishermen to take extra precautions and keep alert of bears while in the field.

We advise outdoorsmen to wear noisy little bells on their clothing, so as not to startle bears that aren't expecting them. We also advise outdoorsmen to carry pepper spray with them in case of an encounter with a bear.

It is also a good idea to watch out for fresh signs of bear activity. Outdoorsmen should recognize the difference between black bear and grizzly bear manure: Black bear manure is smaller and contains lots of berries and squirrel fur. Grizzly bear manure has little bells in it and smells like pepper."

  6. Dr. Joe,

I was really surprised when you can here. My first thought was "Boy is he going to get hammered with questions." Also "What is he going to do when the answer is not what the person wants to hear." Boy you did a wonderful job all the time you where here. The post that started all this was a loaded one. The brave soul you are you took it on. Bless you for it.

I'll talk to Rochelle, I think you should get a hall pass in the shape of a key. A key to open the gates to this forum, if you decide to come back.

You will be always loved here by the vast majority. I am sure you would be welcomed back, if someday you decided to brave this form again. Thanks a lot for every thing you have done for us here.

    Take care,

    Your friend John.

  7. I'll start ok?...

For me I try to keep as busy as possible. I have become a home repair/remodeling queen this past year, planning one project after another. I think it helps both of us to focus on something other than the cancer and the results are very rewarding (as I write this two men are in my livingroom putting stone over our brick fireplace).

I feel I need to make a few clarifications. First it has not been in the last year. I was dx 6/12/02. That summer I was being radiated every work day and low dose chemo once a week. Also that summer I took out all of our kitchen cabinets, tile on the floor, and reinstalled new cabinets and flooring. Moved the sink, put in new back splash, refinished the counter top twice. The reason for the second time, Tyler set a hot pan on the counter top and melted the 8 caoats of urethane and burned the counter top.

The stories go on and on. I just want to say that we do not sit around and letting the demons work on us. Yes, I did that kitchen when I was having my butt kicked by chemo and radiation. I just worked slower, took naps, and got help from friends and family.

Like others have said here we work with the positive. We keep trying new things when something else did not work. We use what we have and not worry about what we used to have. We are really happy when we gain back some of what we lost and find new things that help. Like this site.

  8. A man and his pet giraffe walk into a bar and start having a few quiet drinks. As the night goes on, they get pretty drunk. The giraffe finally passes out near the pool tables and the man decides to go home.

As the man is leaving, he's approached by the barman who says, "Hey, you're not gonna leave that lyin' here, are ya?"

"Hmph," says the man, "that's not a lion, it's a giraffe."

  9. Laura,

I had several injections of procrit. At one point I was giving myself injections of it. Yes it did help. It was not like the commercial, where you are playing with the kids and going back to work. I had it when I was getting low dose chemo and radiation. It did pick me up a bit. When my levels got really low it could not tell a difference, except that my counts did come up some.
