michellem
my mums pain is getting worse every day even though they are upping the dose of pain relief she is on (mst slow release) she is still at home. It is so awful to see her like this. I dont think the chemo is doing anything, execpt making her worse. The doctors arent very hopeful, they say the chemo is just to relieve symptoms but its doing nothing for her. There are some days she is good and we get out and about. But she has been waking up every morning with awful pain for the last few weeks. Can anyone help, I dont know what to do anymore. She was diagnosed NSCL cancer stage 4 in July this year. fillise
I'm saying a prayer for your mom's pain relief. What kind of pain meds are they giving your mom? Susan

Ellen B.
Can't your mum have radiation for pain relief?
michellem
Well initially they had planned to do radiation, then they decided not to. They say they cant 'cure' it only control it. They are doing 3 rounds of chemo then rescanning to see whats happening. I think I will talk to the onc again and see when or if they plan to do it because today the pain was so bad she needs something to help. raneyf
The radiation would be for her spine or other bone mets that are causing pain. It wouldn't be to cure, but to alleviate the pain. It worked 100% for me. I don't have to take any pain meds now, so it's worth asking about.
michellem
Hi, Thanks for your reply. She has pain in bottom of back from the mets and then she has arm and shoulder pain, from tumor pressing on a nerve (so they say). Thats good to hear that the radiation helped your pain. Were you on alot of pain medication? Was your pain from the cancer on the bone?
raneyf
I was on 600mg ibuprofen every 4 hours, +20mg of the long acting oxy 2x per day, with the 5mg breakthrough pain tabs of oxy used sometimes too. It was from bone pain in my left hip and spine.
VegasMomOf3
Hi there, My Mom had a catheter inserted into her spinal column that is attached to a pump that delivers dilaudid 24/7. She carries the pump around in a little fanny pack. Yes, she has to be careful with the tubing and the catheter entrance site, but this has sure made a HUGE difference in her pain!! My Mom also takes Lyrica....150mg two times per day. My Mom had to see a "pain management" physician to get this done. The only remedy the other doctors had was to up the narcotics which were horrible on Moms stomach and made her woozy and weepy all of the time. The experience we've had with the pain management doctor has been such a blessing!! Donna
Shelley (MLC)
Hi, I am so sorry to hear about your mom's pain. It's so frustrating not to be able to help. Have they tried the patches for her pain. I thought I had read elsewhere on this site that paople had good results using them. Good luck! My thoughts are with you. michellem
Hi, Thanks for all your replies. Mum woke up with no pain today for the first time in about a week it was great, someone answering my prayers! Mum is on Lyrica 100mg at night and 25mg in morning, as it makes he very drowsy so give her less during day. she tried fennyl patches but the dosage needed to be changed more frequently and they said it would be easier to manage pain with the mst tablets because they have many different dosages. we have a pain team that come out to us and they are trying to get it under control as they say she shouldnt be in pain with all the medication they can give. mums pain has been so up and down that maybe its hard for them to get it sorted. but please god now it will get better soon. I am trying to get apiontment with onc to talk to him aobut radiation and whats going on. she has another scan in about 2 weeks or so, so that might tell us more about how the treatment is doing. thanks again
Jyoung20
I have been keeping up with this thread. I am so glad your mom woke up without the pain this morning. Prayers for continued painfree mornings. God Bless!! Jamie
J.C.
The right combination of medication may be found and your mother had at least that one day without pain. You kept a list of what she took the day before? Lets pray for more of them. Jackie
michellem
we have everything written down from the tablets to the type of pain to where it is, in hope we can get it right for her. Thanks for your reply, take care
Don M
I think seeing a pain management specialist as Donna suggested is a good idea. they can review the pain control regime and make changes if needed. I am glad your mom had no pain this morning. Do M
Kasey
Hi Michelle, I'm glad mum had a good day finally. Just curious as to what, if anything, you heard from Ana??? Any advice? I know it is far away, but thought perhaps they might offer some suggestions. Kasey
fillise
Michelle--I'm glad to hear that your mom is finding relief. My mom had severe pain from mets in her spine. She did 3 weeks of radiation and that helped immensely. In fact she did her radiation before the chemo and I think that helped her to stand the chemo better. She is now seeing a pain management specialist for problems related to severe arthritis in her spine. I hope your mom continues to find relief.
