Moms platelet count

Hi everyone. I was wondering if anyone could give me some insight to what my mom is going through. She has nsclc with mets to the brain. She went through radiation, and has been having chemo for about 3 months or so. For the last 6 weeks she has not been able to have it due to her platelet count. It has gone from 45, to 50 and they say there is nothing she can do to get it back up. They won't give it to her until it reaches 100. She is very tired and is having such a hard time breathing. Is there anything she can do?? Will different food help? I am just searching for anything to help her. She told me that she is starting to feel like she did in the beginning. WIth the chemo she started to feel better, but now she feels she is getting worse. I am at a loss and need help. Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks and God bless,

Tammy

Hi Tammy,

I had my platelets drop twice in the beginning of my treatments. Both went below 20,000. Don't remember the exact numbers. It does knock the energy out for sure. Might want to ask about a transfusion? Not sure at what point they do it. Worth a try. They adjusted the chemo to stop that from happening again and it did not. Also was told platelets have to be over 100,000 to get chemo. Hope this helps. Peace, take care and God bless.

Mine dropped to the point that they gave me a transfusion at one point. Since then I have had red cells but no more platelets. I am taking Neupogen for my WBC and Arenesp (sp?) for my RBC and my platelets seem to be holding their own right now.

Prayers and best wishes sent your way.

God Bless,

MO

When my platlets dropped to almost nothing, my onc gave me NuMega shots daily for a week to bring them back up. Side effect was a nasty case of endema, but lasix took care of that and it brought the counts back up pretty quickly. Good Luck

Blessings

My dad has just been through all of that. His platelets were 12,000, his wbc was .07 and his rbc were very low, too. He had two transfusions and 3 shots a day for 3 weeks until all of his counts went back up. Today, was his first radiation treatment in over 3 weeks. He has mostly been in the bed the whole time from the weakness. He does seem to be feeling some better today. It just takes time. Hang in there!!
