  1. Hello.  So happy to hear of your story of survival.

I survived but my father in law and my husband did not.

Did you hear the American Lung Association trying to raise money for research of lung cancer?

I bet not.  The news broadcasts every month it seems about events to raise money for Breast Cancer

BUT almost never about lung cancer events.  Most people think that all people with lung cancer smoked.

Do they ever mention that pregnancy and breast feeding decrease your chances for breast cancer?

Do they ever say that using birth control pills etc increase your chance for breast cancer? No they call them "health care".

When I was young they encouraged you to smoke and enjoy yourself.  Every one smoked on TV , the news broadcasters, Lucille Ball and Ricky .

Research had  been done at that time that showed it put you at risk but the tobacco companies said it was not good research, you'd be fine.

After all they wanted to make lots of money!

I hope you are serious with wanting to join us few survivors to inform the public and get research on prevention, early diagnosis and cures.

  2. Hello , glad you found us.  Stage I sounds like that really caught it early.  Where you having symptoms that the doctor was doing tests for?

I had surgery way back in 1998, they took my R upper lobe, the old fashion way, break ribs and open up the chest..

It took me quite a while to get over the worst of it.  I also had had chemo and radiation so I was pretty weak from that and ended up

going to physical therapy to get my strength back and I also did water aerobic class.

As far as the nose goes it may have been irritated from intubation or from using Oxygen .  I wonder it getting a netty pot ( they are used by people who have sinus and nasal allergies)

rinsing it with the saline might help.  You could ask your doctor or pharmacist.  Your sense of smell if your nose is in trouble may also effect your taste.

Keep us posted on how you are doing.  Hope you find a good solution.

  3. Thanks for the update.  No change sounds great to me.

I think the view from the highroad is great !  Scientifically it has been proven that

even making a laughing sound and putting it with a smile on your face is good for you.

It raises good hormones and makes you healthier.

  4. Welcome.  You are really at the beginning of your journey.  You say it is only 3 months since you had your lobectomy?

It is great that you are thinking of others  and want to help.  I agree.  We need to give , we all need to bond together.

I have survived . Wish they had MITS back in 98'.  Please let us know how your CT comes out.

    Keep us posted.

  5. Hello Joyce.  I am glad you took the time to introduce yourself and tell your story.

That is sad that after 3 years it showed up again.  Radiation can be very therapeutic.

Now with better and better technology they can be much more exact aiming it !

Shrinkage sounds like some good news,  Keep us posted on your results for the June CT.

  6. Hi Peggy    Boy you really are waging the battle!    I sleep on an air mattress which helps me a lot with "left over"  chest pain from

my treatment.  Is that what you want ?  Do you really mean a mattress full of water?

Do you attend a church ?  Do they know you need help?  I don't know of a specific charity right now.

Glad you told your story.  I am sure you will help someone else with It.   Keep us posted on what you find.

  7. Debbie I am a survivor.  Before I even got married my husband's father died of lung cancer. So his mother had to come to our wedding alone.

My journey started December 3, 1997. I had 2 different chemos and daily radiation.  The tumor  in my right upper lobe shrunk.

I was able to have surgery and after I had more chemo ( Cisplatin and Etopiside.) . I went to a local support group in St. Paul for lung cancer.

I met a wonderful women Connie who eventually introduced me to Katie who started this on line support group and murged with Lungevity because it also

was into educating and research and support for those with lung cancer.

Then  about 2 years ago my husband was told he had lung cancer.  It started with 2 tiny spots.  They were vicious and spread to his hip,

lymph nodes, spine the to his cerebral spinal fluid and I lost him.   We had been married 45 years.

I go to a grief group.

I have been through this journey, have friends that have been through this journey, have lost loved ones to this journey .

Did I mention last year I retired working as an RN.  It seems many times at work I would find out my patient was on the journey or had a relative there.

I really want an early screening diagnostic tool.   Better targeted treatment and cures.  Best of all a way to prevent this from happening at all.

Wishing great results from your treatment like my good friend Janet that I met with small cell about 15 years ago.  She is still in " remission"

  8. Hello, glad you found us.  I have several friends that have survived SCLC for many years.  Are you getting chemo?

Glad to hear the tumor near your heart has responded so well to the radiation.  That is good news.

This disease and treatment is quite a challenge emotionally and physically.   Please keep us posted.

We understand what you are going through.  We have been there.

  9. Wow !  Another tumor !  Thankfully it was found.   This is a tough journey.  This time, after surgery, I wonder if they will prescribe some chemo.

When is the surgery scheduled?  Hope you have some good friends and family to help you with all the appointments and your recovery from surgery.

    Please keep us posted.

  10. Hi Katie.  Glad you found us.  Boy you are a wonderful girl to give up your new job to go home and help with Mom.

No one deserves Cancer.  It is a tough disease.  Most people that are diagnosed with lung cancer do not smoke.

Many, many, never ever smoked.  There are other causes besides smoking. Glad to hear she is tolerating her

treatment and is feeling better.  Where did the cancer spread to ?  Is she receiving any ofher treatment ?

Please keep us posted on how she is doing.  Also how you and your family  are doing.

  11. Hello and welcome.  You have done one of the things you need to do , you found us.   Finding  support and information , a place to air your feelings are all very important for you.

They saw the spot last August? It took 5 months to diagnose?  Glad they got your treatment going. I started with daily radiation and 2 chemo drugs.  The follow up CT showed it responded.

then I had surgery to remove my right upper lobe and more chemo after. Let us know what your next step is.  Keep us posted.

See below to find the story of my journey, It was tough but I am so thankful I am here to tell you about it.

  12. Hi Angie. Welcome .  Did the Doctor mention Targeted therapy?  They do a special test to see if you qualify.  Not everyone does.

You must be just 2 months since surgery,. How is your chest doing.  Are you off pain meds?   When are you scheduled for a follow up CT?

Please keep us posted on how you are doing.

  13. Hi Kathy.  Glad you found us.  I did not have SCLC .  I had NSCLC but I was given those drugs.  They are ruff.

I had to be pre medicated for nausea , it helped some.  Also I did loose most of my hair.  The good part of it was I

did not have to shave my legs or underarms for months .  You do want to protect her from anyone who is sick for she could catch it

really easy.  Do you have any family or friends on the mainland to stay with?

Keep us posted on how she and your are doing.

  14. I was not planning to go to Hope Summit.  I have 2 senior citizen dogs that I love .  I don't want them boarded.

Also, by the way, my husband was a Navy vet and I followed him everywhere.

    I lived in Slidell 81'-84' , La and Abita Springs 93'-95' . I also lived twice in Gautier , Ms  77' to 81' and 95' to 97'.

I have been back up here in Minnesota since then, which was my husbands home state.  I 'm thinking you're warmer than us now.

It is 19.6 degrees this morning.  There is hope . Next week they predict we will go up to the 60's.

    Have a great day.

  15. Hi Rose.  Wow you had two surgeries on the same side of your chest.

Isn't it something how our bodies can adapt ?  I have a friend who also had lung cancer and had a lobe of lung removed,

then a few years later a tumor showed up on the other side.  So the took a lobe off that side also.  Bothe were different kinds of NSCLC !

She is doing well and goes to exercise everyday. Glad you are here to share your survival story and give support to those just starting.

    Donna G

  16. Hi Pixie.  Glad you found us.  How did the doctor find that tumor?  Were you having symptoms?

When they remove a lobe on the right chest the other two lobes just expand out and fill the space.

I had a lobe on the right taken out in 1998 ,  no problems since then as far as breathing goes.

Keep us posted on how things are going.

    Waiting to hear.

  17. Hello Cindy.   I was born and raised in Boston.  My family all live in Massachusetts .  Boy on top of all the snow you had this to deal with too!

I retired last summer from a career in Nursing.  I was never able to have children so I did all my care giving to my patients

When you post again I hope you tell us how you are doing, what kind of lung cancer you have  and what treatment you are getting.

There are a lot of great hospitals , doctors and clinics in your state.

    Keep us posted.
