  1. I wrote them an email bascially saying how sad I was about the loss, but how appauled I was at their coverage. I told them they had the perfect opportunity to really help this disease that took one of their own and they failed. I basically said how it is very near and dear to my heart and maybe they can come up with some ideas for November since it is lung cancer awarness and have something in his honor to promote ALL apsects of this disease. To really help promote funding, advocacy and education on this disease. Hopefully they will listen. I was happy to see the tribute on this man though. I feel for his family and friends. I was 26 when i lost my dad 2 years ago and I know his children are close in that age. It is so devasting I pray for them.
  2. I was shocked to see the way they are spinning this on GMA. Is anyone else a little bit aggravated it is not focusing on the fact it is not JUST a smokers disease. Also not mention it is the most underfunded cancer. The message board is making me mad as well. I am not denouncing how horrible smoking is, but their coverage on it has been appauling. Bacially if you smoke then you get lung cancer....are we really fighting this uphill battle. Also the expert they had on LC was hilarious he said how more women are getting lung cancer (which is true) but he stated that it is declining in men because obviously men have listened to the message that smoking causes cancer? So women are not paying attention so that is why they are increasing their risk? imagine. sorry had to rant. What a sad day though, Peter Jennings was my favorite anchor. I was so sad to hear he had to battle this and even sadder about the news today. My thoughts and prayers are with is family.

  8. Lung cancer may be linked to Gulf War fires Monday, December 20, 2004 Posted: 12:18 PM EST (1718 GMT) WASHINGTON (AP) -- Veterans of the 1991 Persian Gulf War exposed to pollution from oil well fires, exhausts and other sources may face an increased risk of lung cancer, a government advisory group reported Monday. A committee of the Institute of Medicine concluded there isn't enough evidence to determine whether most of veterans' health problems are associated with such exposures. But it said occupational and environmental exposure to combustion products has been shown to increase danger of lung cancer. "Studies of people exposed to air pollution, vehicle exhaust and burning of coal and other heating and cooking fuels consistently show that such exposures are linked to increased risk for developing lung cancer," committee chair Lynn Goldman said in a statement. "This provides sufficient evidence that exposure to combustion products during the Gulf War could be associated with lung cancer for some veterans," said Goldman, a professor at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. However, Goldman added, "it should be emphasized that smoking is the major culprit for lung cancer, accounting for 80 percent of all cases, according to the American Cancer Society." The committee said evidence is too weak to connect other cancers to exposure to combustion products. But it said there are indications that such exposure may be linked to asthma, cancers of the nose, mouth and throat, bladder and to low birth weight and premature births among women exposed while pregnant. A major problem, the report said, is that there is little information about the actual exposure of individual service members to these pollutants during the war. Iraqi troops retreating from Kuwait ignited more than 600 oil well fires and the smoke and other combustion products sometimes remained low to the ground mixing with other products from vehicle exhaust, heaters and cooking. The Institute of Medicine is a branch of the National Academy of Science, an independent organization chartered by Congress to advise the government on scientific matters. 11. Is there anyway we can use that picture montage? I think people visually would be really recetive to that when they see the faces of people who are affected.
  12. haha Hello erin!! Yes I have QUITE the email list!!
  13. Oh my I have an idea that might work really well!!!! Well not sure we can do it but that wonderful wonderful photo montage (had enya playing to it, but not sure if that would be allowed) Maybe use that (if people would allow it) and send the link via mass emails. with facts popping up in between pictures of our loved ones and people on this board (if people agree) and then at the end have the ribbon and a November lung cancer awareness month..maybe at the beginning state lung cancer awareness month? Is this possible or is this just a crazy vision? I just want it to get out there and touch people and make them think, make them act!!!! We can give them a link to this, and other sites also!!!
  14. Thank you katie! yeah i want to come up with a visually appealing email chain for lung cancer awareness Month. I am suprised there isn't one yet!
  15. That is nice. I might come up with my own i guess I really want it to be one of those mass emails that even comes back to me! Which of all the site do you guys think that has most up to date facts and info?
  16. So what exact info should we include? I think it would be great to get the info out. You can even email it to news media.
  17. You know how there are emails that get forwarded around for other cancer awareness months. Does anyone know if there is one for Lung Cancer already?? If not maybe we can come up with one?? We can maybe compile some links and info to go on it. I have a friend who does graphics so maybe i can ask her to come up with a nice clear ribbon for it? Just a thought!
  18. Totally agree!!! the way they word it on eonline too is like another smoker gets a cancerous tumor no biggie. and since he is a LONG-TERM smoker...it is expected. I hate that. MAJOR HEALTH PROBLEM: Major Dad star Gerald McRaney undergoing surgery Monday in Houston to remove a cancerous tumor from his lung. The actor, a longtime smoker, is expected to remain hospitalized for several days before returning to Los Angeles to begin work on a new sitcom, Commando Nanny.
