bam451
My mom finished about 38 rounds of radiation. She did really well. Did not have any problems with eating. Did have a few bad burns but they are healing good. Has been tired, but kept up with work. God bless her! She worked three days a week during radiation and when it was finished has returned to work full time. But as of late, she has been in a lot of pain on the inside as she says. Is this normal? I know that she can still feel the effects for a while and that it takes a lot of toll on your insides. Could it be that her tissue is just sore?!? Or as she puts it " My insides are mad." She said the pain is not just where she had radiation. She goes to the doc on Friday but I'm just really scared. I'm hoping that this is just part of the radiation. Judy-OK
Hi Bam you will probably get much better answers than mine because like your mom it is hard to explain. I completed my radiation in August of 2006. I still have discomfort, as your mom says, on the inside. PET scans show stable. I have reasoned in my mind if the radiation burned the outside of my skin the way it did then I do NOT really even want to know what it did on the inside!!! It is like there is a thickening of the tissue or skin. It is not a dibilating pain but is a constant nuisance at this point. When it gets bad enough I take a pain pill. Hope you mom is better soon. Liz13
Thickening is the right word. It showed up 2 times on my CT. I had 37 days of radiation. Hugs, Liz
rvillella
The radiation really does a number on your insides. Since I've had it twice in different areas of the chest I have different pains. This last round ended up messing with a bundle of nerves that are near where they where shooting the radiation so they hurt inside. It is sometimes hard to explain but is is painful. I found that a heating pad under my left arm for a little while eases the pain in that side. Hope she feels better soon. Ralph
betty boop
I am so glad to hear others have pain from radiation. I have been searching the web for answers. I hurt in my back mostly where they hit me with the radiation. Also I have "a tired back", I don't know how else to describe how it feels. I guess overall I am ok for what cancer has done in my life. Each day I wake up and lay there a few minutes to see if I hurt anywhere! Thanks to others for sharing their radiation pain. betty
kamataca
Congrats to your mom for finishing her tx! I hope they can help her manage the pain. My mom is still in the middle of her tx, so I don't have any advice to offer... Kelly
masspa
My mom's oncologist had a great analogy - she said the radiation basically gives the patient a sunburn inside - that helped my mom realize why she had some of her discomfort, as well as to help her understand why she was getting dehydrated. congrats to mom on finishing her radiation!!!!
