  3. Best Wishes for many more years to come Susan.
  4. Hi Patricia, Welcome to LCSC,pleased to meet you, although sorry that you have received a LC dx of course. This site has been a wonderful find for me over three years ago, wishing that I had found it earlier. I was dxd in 2008 with NSCLC,was successfully treated with neo-adjuvant chemo, vinolbine and cisplatin,it was hoped that this chemo would shrink my tumour to a managable size to allow me surgery, well fortunately this worked and in January 2009 I had a upper right lobectomy, there was spread to a local lymph node which was also removed. I have to say despite all my forebodings of the treatments that lay ahead,I sailed through the lot,OK I did have one occassion of constipation caused by the chemo, which I could have avoided if I had paid more attention to my fluid intake. The surgery I worried about being extremely painful and leaving me a breathless invalid was not realised.OK it was a wee bit uncomfortable, but painful is a bit of an exaggeration. Today nearly four years after my dx,I am feeling great,I do get a bit out of breathe climbing Scottish mountains, but honestly I think I had that problem before my dx. You know lung cancer may have rained on my parade, but it sure came with a great big silver lining,I have never had so much fun in my life since I became a lung cancer advocate eg tomorrow theres a film director coming to film me at home for a TV prog aimed at teenagers to give up smoking or not to start, last Friday I was in the ICU in Glasgows Victoria Infirmary on a photo shoot for a new lung cancer magazine.Incidentally the girl photographer was also called Victoria, and on the following Monday if was interviewed by a researcher from Channel 4 about a cancer prog to be screened in October, guess what her name was?yes Victoria. My best wishes for you as your treatments continue, may they be successful in removing all these cancer cells from your body, looking forward to getting to know you, incidentally, why not visit our Just for Fun forum,to exchange stories of the lighter side of your life.Theres also the members photo album to explore, lots of my pics of Scotland to see and my trips around the US of A too.
  5. Good Evening Randy and Everyone, I have been working too, cutting the grass, weeding the borders, also pressure washed my drive and rear patio, the place is looking lovely.I have the arrival of a film director tomorrow to look forward to,he is filming me for a programme aimed at teenagers to give up their smoking habit or not to start one.He has sent me seven questions to consider for the film,so I have just spent some time, writing out sample replies,I dont want to over rehearse these or it may not turn out natural on film,I so want this to go well,it would be amazing for me if I could influence even just one teenager not to smoke. Still no word back about my new job, methinks Disclosure Scotland are really busy just now or many of the staff have gone on holiday, looking forward to starting . I have my six monthly check up tomorrow,we dont do CT scans in the UK as a follow up for LC,so chest examination and X-Ray,hopefully all is well and a "see you in six months".Busy day Monday then, check up ,filming and then evening lawn bowling. Are'nt the Brits doing well in the medal tables,at least twice as many golds compared to Beijing?. I was at my daughters home recently, just had to mention Andre Rieu was coming to Glasgow in December with the Johann Strauss Orchestra, dont think they have ever come to Scotland before?,Jennifer says Dad, you like Andre, why have'nt you booked a couple of tickets?(did'nt tell her because there're too blooming dear LOL)I will book them online for you, within a few minutes I am involved in seat selection, next moment they are booked ($310 approx) och never mind I deserve a wee treat now and again. Looking forward to Friday's evenings cruise up Loch Lomond, with beautiful scenery all around, hope the sun shines with the Morgan Lee Band performing on deck,ah bliss, did I tell you about my two French friends some years ago visiting me in Scotland?no? well I took them to Loch Lomond one evening,to a spot called Rowardennan,it was a beautiful clear sunny evening the Sun was just setting by Ben Lomond, the sky was a golden red,the scene could'nt have been a better introduction to tourists to Loch Lomond,I am so pleased with myself for bringing Phillipe and JohnPierre ,when Phillipe turns to me and says,"Eric its all very nice, but where is the Fish and Chip shop?. Bye everyone enjoy the rest of Sunday.
  6. Hi, Welcome to LCSC,I am so sorry to read of your Mums dx,there are many wonderful LC survivors here that will share their experiences with you and help lighten the burden you are carrying. Nearly 4 years have passed since my dx,your post reminds me of the anxieties that both me my family and friends went through at the time.I had the feeling that my world had come crashing down on me,I had no future,no light at the end of tunnel, comforting words from all around me could not dispel the thoughts that I had, that this disease was going to kill me and in the not too distant future. As my treatment plan was introduced to me,chemo and possibly surgery if the chemo was successful in reducing my tumour to a operable size, now I started to worry, will the chemo make me extremely nauseous?,will my hair fall out?,(dont mind the gray ones) will my surgery be extremely painful and leave me a breathless invalid?,what if the surgery is unsuccessful?,you name it,I probably worried about that too. Well I promise you for all my worries,I sailed through all my treatments, nothing of my dark imaginings came even close to being realised.I have since my operation in January 2009 no further treatments. I still struggled mentally with my cancer, now, I did my research,I devoured all the books in my library on cancer, looking for that elusive good news that I can survive this disease, very often I was disapointed, the stats were'nt good either, then one day I picked up a newspaper,in it, an article on a guy who was setting up a lung cancer support group in a hospital near to my home.I read on, this guy was amazing, he was all I hoped I would find one day-a real life long term survivor. His name is Robert Lowe, dxd with SCLC in 1993,given two months by his medical team to live,he asks for the best option for a treatment that can extend his life,he receives a chemo regime that leaves him so ill, that his family was called to his bedside on more than one occassion as his doc did'nt think Robert would see the next day, well unbelievably,to his doctors Robert makes a full recovery,in 2007 he is then dxd with NSCLC has chemo and surgery. I have just got to meet this guy,and I did,I joined his support group,by co-incidence Robert 10 years my senior was born and brought up in the same district in Glasgow as myself,we went to the same schools, even shared the same teachers,we had so much in common not forgetting a Glasgow sense of humour,Robert now 72,will celebrate next year his twentyth LC anniversary. It is of course my intention to follow in Roberts footsteps.LOL. I appreciate not every LC survivor will be a Robert Lowe, but I have since discovered there are many others who are long term survivors,so there is hope for everyone however bleak things may initially seem. Please pass onto your Mum my best wishes and that she has every success with her ongoing treatments.Things do with the passage of time improve, take one day at a time,I know it sounds a bit trite, but it does hold true.A saying I heard recently rung true with me "Worry is like sitting in a rocking chair,it gives you something to do,but you dont get anywhere".So for all the many hours I had worrying going through my treatments they were a waste of time, everything turned out well for me.God Bless.
  7. Hi, Its me again,I forgot about a paragraph on the Olympics in my original post, just wondering how it went down with an American audience?,at first I found it a bit confusing and thought, I am not going to enjoy this, then it just seemed to all come to-gether,I really enjoyed the whole event. It was so very British I thought, did you find it somewhere between eccentric to bonkers?
  8. Good Afternoon Everyone, Thought I had solved my laptop problems,so I wrote a post, clicked submit, page comes up saying I must log in to send a post?log in page comes up,I click login, post vanished?grrr. The poor summer weather continues here, best bet to escape it, is to go abroad,my sister Dot and her husband Jim have been entertaining their friends from Florida these last two weeks, they, despite the weather, have really enjoyed their stay in Scotland, particularly liked the Victorian Architecture of Glasgows buildings,Dot and Jim,depart for Florida with her friends tonight,to spend a couple of weeks there with them.By co-incidence,Irene and Pat went off to Majorca yesterday with grandson Max,I am going to miss them.Seems I need another holiday,my visit to the USA last May seems so long ago. Friday last I was at the Victoria Infirmary visiting the Intensive Care Unit,it was for a photo shoot for a new lung cancer information booklet, preparing patients for lung cancer surgery. This will be published shortly by the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation. They had screened off a portion of the Unit for us,I was introduced to a young Doctor and nurse, who would pose with me for various scenes, some at the bedside, some with me in my jammies and dressing gown in bed,one scene, the nurse has to hold my hand to re-assure me,we are to look at each other, with solemn facial expressions, this takes a bit of time since the nurse keeps giggling at me,saying it was all my fault?.It take about two hours to complete the shoot, everyone seems very happy with the way things went. I am waiting for the phone to ring this afternoon,a girl from a film company is making a programme for TVs Channel Four, they are looking for cancer survivors with a story to tell, focusing on the indiscriminate nature of the disease, raising awareness of it and to encourage viewers to donate to cancer charities.I also have a visit to my home next Monday from a film director who is making another TV programme specifically aimed at teenagers to dissuade from taking up a career in smoking. August for me is starting to fill up,I have an invitation to join with the Morgan Lee Band as they are performing on the Maid of the Loch as she cruises up Loch Lomond on the 10th of Aug,I will also accompany Irene and Pat as he enjoys the 60th Birthday prezzie I bought him ,a sea plane flight from Loch Lomond up the beautiful West Coast of Scotland, thereafter, an evening meal in a lochside restaurant in Balloch.I have been given a 3 day ticket for two for a Whiskey Company Sponsored Golf Tournament at Gleneagles, also have Michelles and Darrens wedding to attend in Uddingston.SIGN meeting, support group meeting and my 6 monthly check up. Still no word from the Theatre Company who have offered me the front of house job, they cannot confirm this until their application to Disclosure Scotland is processed to check I do not have any criminal history. I think that covers all I had mentioned in my first attempt to post, hopefully this one will arrive safely,Bye everyone, enjoy the rest of your day.
  9. Good Afternoon Everyone, Special Hello to Janet sitting in a hospital waiting to have her tests completed,I do hope this time does not hang heavy on you, nice to know I am not the only one who can have a perfect day. The dismal weather in the UK continues, something to do with the jet stream that comes up from the East coast of America,it should bypass the North of Scotland taking with it all the depressions and low pressure zones that would deposit all the rain into the North Sea or even Norway, the jet stream is located this summer passing through the South of England.Weather experts are claiming or more perhaps hoping, that the weather will be much improved for the Olympics starting in a couple of weeks,so fingers crossed. Gymming and Swimming this morning,my 1.30pm lawn bowling tie was cancelled due to rain,so it will have to be rescheduled. We have a new carpet for downstairs ordered hopefully it will be laid on Friday,so I spent this afternoon, moving furniture in to the garage and lifting the old carpet, boy it was heavy going, think I will sleep well to-night. Currently on the news today, was a report that in England ,120,000 families are responsible for costing the tax payer nearly £9 billion pounds in vandalism, crime and other anti-social behaviour, reminds of some years ago,one day I went to visit my Mother, coming up to her front door I noticed one of her windows was boarded up,I asked what had happened, she told me about a new family that had moved into the street near to her,she watched two of this families kids playing outside her home, one of them picked up a stone and threw it at her window, breaking it,I was really angry, this could have resulted in my Mum being hurt,so given the address i went to the kids parents house, the Mother opened her door,I am confronted by this rather tough looking person, lumpy headscarf, cross over pinnie,I tell her one of her kids had just brocken my Mothers window, quick as a flash, did you see them doing this, yes I said, immeadiately she asks what colour of clothes were they wearing,I had to correct myself, sorry I did'nt witness the incident myself but my Mother did,at that moment both her kids arrive at the front door, one about 12 the other about 10,an angry Mother then asks the elder one ,did you throw a stone through this Mans window?no mammy, pointing his finger at his younger sibling,he adds, it was Johnny,She takes her hand a gives the elder boy a violent slap across the face, and shouts "What have I told you before about telling tales",exit one Eric,no longer in any doubt why some kids become anti-social adults. Enjoy the rest of your day everyone,Bye.
  10. Thanks everyone for your good wishes,Bruce you are almost right about about the paycheck part, however my daughter who currently has a part time teaching job at the FE college I retired from last year, has decided to return to Uni next term to do a post graduate course in Secondary School Teaching, this will give her greater opertunities in seeking out a full time teaching job, since this course is full time, with school placements, she is unable to take on part time work to help augment her living expenses.I did agree to help her out financially,I have some investments tucked away which I dont want to disturb,so I think my paychecks will be transferred to Jennifer's bank account, the joys of being a parent.Hi Jane, good to hear from you,how are you doing? with regard to starting my job, this should be quite soon,we have a thing here in Scotland called disclosure, its required for any job which involves working with the public, its a formal search of a individuals past, that they have no criminal record. As a former lecturer I had to have whats known as enhanced disclosure, but in changing jobs each employer has to reapply for new employees, following this proceedure,my new employer is putting me through a short training course before I take up my duties.
  11. Hi Sandy, Welcome to LCSC,looking forward to getting to know you,I had a upper right lobectomy and the removal of an infected lymph node, that was in January 2009 and I have had no further treatments since.I suppose the feeling of "what if",remains with all lung cancer survivors,as Bud mentions, this dark cloud does diminish with the passing of time.My buddy Robert Lowe was dxd with SCLC in 1993,given only 2 months to live by his doctors, which he ignored and carried on living anyway, then in 2007 he is then dxd with NSCLC,has surgery and chemo,is alive and well today and at 72 years old, he has the enegry and a lust for life of people half his age. Theres a saying I recently discovered,Worry-its like sitting in a rocking chair-it gives you something to do,but it dos'nt get you anywhere.Robert has survived almost 20 years now, imagine the waste of his time if he had to worry every day of these past years that his cancer might have returned. My advice, get on with your life and seek out all the things you enjoy doing.
  12. Good Afternoon Everyone, Just reflecting on some days are better than others,Saturday there,I had what I would describe as a perfect day.I was invited to a lawn bowling tournament in Glasgow,an all day affair, for the princely fee of £10,we arrive at 9.30pm at the bowling club for a breakfast of coffee and bacon butties, play bowls until 1.00pm break for lunch,of mince, potatoes, and veggies, dessert,of ice cream and apple pie, followed by the cheese board and coffees, not fogetting a free alcoholic drink of your choice, then an afternoon of bowling until 4.30pm.home pick up Sally, off to my sister Irene's house in Cumbernauld,Max(5)is also there,we have some games until his bedtime,I read him a story, then share adult company until home time. Its now 10.30pm,bit early for bed,I play a Andre Riev DVD,its called La Vie Est Belle,it was filmed outdoors in the Waldbhune Park in Berlin, this includes a scene where in the background you can hear the faint sound of bagpipes, which steadily grows louder, until 300 pipers enter the arena, from all directions, passing through the midst of the German audience, who by now are giving them a standing ovation as the pipers pass, playing Scotland the Brave, they then join with the Johann Strauss Orchestra to play Amazing Grace, there's tears on many a face in the audience,at the beauty of the sounds being produced, this was followed by Auld Lang Syne, everyone cross linking arms in the Scottish tradition, finally they leave the arena playing Wooden Heart.Yep a perfect day,I am so blessed to still be here to enjoy this wonderful thing called life, please dont let this music stop. I mentioned in my last post about applying for a part time job, front of house, at the soon to reopen, refurbished John Wilson theatre in Airdrie, well I had giving up hope of an interview, since three months had passed, without hearing anything, then unexpectedly,I was called for interview on Tuesday last.Well I took with me,as requested, birth certificate, passport, qualifications,Nat Ins Number,I am called into the interview room, two persons, behind a desk, they tell me over 200 candidates applied for the position, however they had reduced this down to a manageable, wait for it,78 persons, gulp, thinks I, 63, and a lung cancer survivor, younger people waiting outside for the interview, well never mind, do your best.I cope well with all their questions eg,how would you deal with a disruptive drunk in the audience of the theatre,or someone using a mobile phone, what about a mother turning up a the theatre with one ticket carrying a very young baby?.i am told they will be interviewing for the remainder of the week, and expect to have come to a decision on who to appoint by Tuesday next,I thank them for seeing me and depart.Today,I receive a phone call, they have decided to award me the position,I am absolutely delighted.I did at the time pick up a programme for forthcoming shows, boy,I am going to enjoy this job. Gymming and swimming this morning, also worked in my sisters back yard putting down weedkiller on her patio,Irene was on holiday today,a local public holiday, thought I would do this for her,her husband is so busy,he spends Mon-Fri away from home, working all over England.Bowling to-night to finish off my day, never a dull moment,as they say, enjoy your day,Bye for now.
  13. Good Evening Everyone, Sorry but my posts here have slipped a bit recently,I have just been so busy, anyway, here in the UK we are experiencing our wettest Summer ever since records began,my toes are becoming webbed and feathers are growing on my body, quack, pardon, sorry about that, when will the sun return?. Well my neice Lianne, gave birth to a baby boy early Friday morning,he is named Zane Burrell Clarke,a little brother for Max,and great nephew to me,welcome to the Planet Earth Zane,we are going to have such fun getting to know each other. Grandfather Pat,enjoyed one of his 60th Birthday presents on Sunday,we all went to Inglestone Race track in Edinburgh,to watch him driving some super classic race cars around the track, methinks Randy will be interested in the cars, Aston Martin DB9,Mazzeratti,Lambourgini,gosh I forgotten the other one?,never mind Randy I will post in the pics shortly, you'll probably know it. Some months ago I mentioned of applying for a part time job for front of the house in the shortly to reopen John Wilson Theatre in Airdrie, which has undergone a major refurbishment.Think the job is to wear a Tuxedo and be a meeter and greeter to all the theatre goers, well I have appeared on the stage of this theatre for years, appearing in such productions as Fiddler on the Roof,Call Me Madam,Hello Dolly,42nd Street,oh enough of my credits, get on with the story.Well the weeks passed, since I sent in my application form and CV,I heard nothing,my daughter said Dad,it happens all the time now,so many people unemployed writing in for jobs, employers dont even acknowledge their applications, well call me old fashioned, but that never happened when I was younger.Well what do you know?, they have asked me to attend for interview tomorrow, gosh I feel like a kid just out of school on my first interview, been years since I had one, well at least for this post I dont even have to do a presentation LOL. Gosh look at the time its gone midnight,Yoga and swimming first thing tomorrow, haircut afternoon, press my trousers, polish my shoes etc,I will let you know how I got on,Goodnight everyone,Bye.
  14. Hi Kurt, Welcome to LCSC,thank you for the time and effort you have spent in writing such a detailed description of your Fathers experience going through a pretty tough time as his Doctors it seems to me, dithered in finding robust measures to treat his medical problems.Phew,it was pretty exhausting for me just to read your account, never mind what your Father had to go through.I do hope that by now,his condition is now stabilised, and he is feeling much more comfortable now. Your description of the giggling trainees incident,to me was utterly unacceptable, particularly in your presence, and would have prompted me to write a letter of complaint to the appropriate health board. Please pass on to your Father my best wishes for a speedy recovery,he is blessed in having such a son as you in his corner to support him,you are a young man but dont let medical staff try to take advantage of that, the least you can expect,is medical staff to treat you and your father with professional support and respect.
  15. Good Morning Everyone, Just dropping by for a moment to wish all my friends here a very happy independance day.I am just off to pick up my great nephew Max and take him to the Airdrie Baptist Church Kids Holiday Club,I am helping out.Max will sometime today become a big brother as his Mum (my niece)Lianne was taken into hospital last night to be induced,so we are all excited about a new arrival to our extended family.Have a great day everyone.
  16. Congratulations Carol, heres to many, many more second birthdays.
  17. Good Evening Susan, Posts into LCSC are becoming scarcer seven days a week, not just at weekends, missing so many of our regulars (hope its not me putting people off?). End of a busy Saturday for me,1 am this morning I completed the Glasgow Dream Walk as a Steward accompanying about 500 woman along the town centre at the River Clyde. It did rain most of the journey but it did'nt dampen the spirits of the lady walkers, who for an additional bit of fun were all wearing their pyjamas.Prior to the walk setting off,the everyone was entertained by a womens drum band who were just great, there were also warm up Zumma? sessions.I did take lots of pics of course, not very successfully this time,I had to delete many due to being out of focus due to not using a tripod for the night scenes and some problems with the auto focus in my camera?.One of the bridges we crossed over the River Clyde at the outset of our walk was closed off on our return leg,not just to pedestrians but to traffic in both directions,as we detoured that bridge we could could see all the police cars blocking the bridge, and a focus of police at the highest point of the bridge, obviously working at persuading the person male/female to come down from the parapet.I have'nt since watched any of the TV news progs about the outcome, as yet. I attended the Guiness Book of World Records attempt today at the Glasgow High School ( a fee paying private school),myself, along with a couple of other men amongst approx 350 women,we performed a Bryan Adams song called When Your Gone, early returns show that over 9000 persons throughout the UK participated, which is approx a 1000 more than the current record,so a little bit of history has been made today,it was real fun to do. ABC tomorrow, then to sister Dots, some fun and games with the grandkids Jack and Emma, then off to the Cluthie Inn to see the Morgan Lee Band perform at 6.00pm,home to see the TV recording of Italy beating England in the Euro Soccer Championships Quarter Finals, well, that would be my dream scenario for a perfect end to a wonderful weekend.I do hope you all have had a super weekend too,bye everyone.

    Two years on

Hi Ronnie, Thanks you for letting us know you are still about,we miss your posts.I do think about you too and how you are getting on.Good to hear that you still have Erica with you.Keep in touch.
  19. Hi Jerry, Thanks for sharing your thoughts,I really enjoyed reading your post,so insightful and enjoyable .Thinks you have been a successful parent, take a bow.
  20. Hi Petunia, Another weird thing,I scan the posts daily and will reply to something current, seems I missed your original post in March,so why would I have even looked at an old post, and replied to it is beyond me,unless it was flagged up again somehow?.Is'nt it strange?
  21. eric byrne

    Here we are!

Hi Alchemistra, Thanks for the update,I have been following your posts, you were wondering how to make things easier for everyone, I know you are doing all you can for everyone,so never reproach yourself that you could have done more.Your father is so fortunate to have such a caring daughter in his corner. My best wishes to your father as his treatments continue, that he is restored to good health.
  22. Good Afternoon Everyone, No posts over the weekend?,everyone out having a great time I hope.my weekend was certainly enjoyable, two events attended on Saturday, The Friends of the River Kelvin and my bowling clubs open day.I decided to fit both in,I picked up my friends Jim and Vic,first to Kelvin park, beautiful place, unfortunately weather spoiled the proceedings a bit by being interupted by heavy showers, however living in Scotland means being well prepared for such weather,so off to the car to don my waterproofs and my big golf brolly,a wee drop of rain wont spoil my day.Highlight of the day was the appearance of many folk music bands, including the Morgan Lee Band,I did enjoy their company before their performance, got some nice pics with them, after the the band completed their performance it was off to my bowling club,I did expect to find everyone in the clubhouse, due to being rained off, unbeliveably, when we arrived the greens were full of people bowling in blue skies and warm sunshine, rain? what rain? this club is only about 15 miles from the Kelvin Park, but they had missed all the showers. We enjoyed a super afternoon there, taking full advantage of the provided hospitality, the food and home baking provided by the lady members was scrumptious, are'nt women wonderful ? if this had been left to the men to organise,we have been limited to packets of chips (crisps in the UK). Sunday up to sister Dots, big event there, which I deliberately missed was the demolition of the first multi-story housing block by explosives,Dot and kids attended,as I expected they had to make a sudden departure to the shelter of their car to excape the hugh cloud of dust created. My niece Lyndsey, has invited me to Anniesland College end of term Art Exhibition tomorrow to view her work, slightly inconvenient for me,as the European Soccer Championships are in full swing, seems I am going to miss two games, maybe get them on catch up TV,and hope I dont run into some blabbermouth who devulges the scores before I get home LOL. Wednesday,I have an invite to attend rehearsals for a world record attempt of most people to perform a song, its by Bryan Adams, forget the title,I was told I would know when I hear it,wrong,I have'nt until now.You might guess, Tracy, the girl who invited me,waited until I said yes, later tells me I will be the only guy amongst goodness knows how many women?,think I am going to enjoy myself. Talking of women, theres no ecaping them for me,I have an invite on the 22nd of June by the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation to act as a steward for a 8km midnight walk through Glasgow, all the participants will be ladies, dressed in their pyjamas, should be fun. Enjoy the rest of your day everyone, bye.
