Angie Dear, I am so sorry to hear how hard things are for your Dad right now. I remember one time Jo called us in the early morning and Bob had fallen and she could not get him up. These are rough times, I know. Never feel like you are whining or complaining. This is the place to say how you are feeling, and we are here for you. Love Nell

Bill, I am so sorry to hear of your wife's condition. As for hospice, Bob got his meds that were for comfort and pain from them. They were delivered from a local pharmacy to the door. He recieved Morphine in 2 forms, xanax for restlessness, some kind of laxative, as Dean Carl mentioned because of the pain meds. His other meds were still prescribed from his regular docs. Tarceva was mentioned but Bob decided not to take it. They also got us a hospital bed on the same day we ordered it. The hospice nurses were there several times a week. Since Bob went so quickly it was almost every day. I can't say enough about how wonderful they were to us. What a tremendous service to families they are! My prayers are with you. Nell

Karen, I know that with Bob, we ended up using the same 7 day 4 times per day pill box that Margaret mentioned and then set out only what he could take, since we ended up feeling it was too dangerous to let him medicate himself. Like some have said, he would forget what he had taken. I do think too that sometimes it gets better as a person adjusts to the medication. If you got that kind of box and filled it yourself , then his parents could give him whatever he needs while you are gone without much trouble, since it would all be in timed compartments. You could do morning and evening and they would only need to do whatever is needed during the day. I am sure with a few days of trial and error dosage wise and getting used to the drug it will improve. Lots of prayers coming your way. Love Nell

Oh Karen, what an awful night you and Dave have had! I can say from experience with Bob, that pain CAN be controlled, and it is so awful when it is not. I am praying for you all that your doc will have wisdom to know what to do for you. Love Nell

VANDEN BERG, (Bob) Bastiaan - Of Flushing, age 76, died Tuesday, February 22, 2005 at home. Mass will be held concelebrated by Fr. Roy Horning, Pastor and Fr. Robert McGraw, friend of the family 11AM Friday, February 25, 2005 at St. Robert Catholic Church. Burial will follow at St. Robert Cemetery. Visitation will be 12Noon-4 and 6-9PM Thursday at Rossell Funeral Home. A Vigil for the deceased will be 7PM Thursday at the funeral home. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to Heartbeat or Project Rachel through St. Robert Catholic Church. Bob was born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, March 4, 1928, the son of Gerard P. and Hendrica (van Zijll) Vanden Berg. He married Johanna Geurts in Amsterdam on February 6, 1954. Bob was a member of St. Robert Catholic Church and served on the Parish Social Ministry and the Diocesan Pastoral Council. He initiated the Respect Life Program at St. Robert. He was an advocate for social justice. He worked at AC Spark Plug for 20 years, retiring in 1988. Bob was a wonderful and beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He will be dearly missed by his family. Surviving are: wife, Johanna Vanden Berg of Flushing; 2 sons, Robert A. and wife Liza Vanden Berg of Navarre, FL, Michael G. and wife Gina Vanden Berg of Flushing; daughter, Mary Jo Vanden Berg of Cincinnati, OH; 3 grandchildren, Courtney and Robert S. Vanden Berg and Clinton and wife Tina Vanden Berg; brother, Wim and wife Ans Vanden Berg; 2 sisters, Nell van den Nieuwboer, Annie Vanden Berg; 3 sisters-in-law, Dinie Vanden Berg, Mieke and husband Wim Burkunk, Tine Schoutsen; brother-in-law, Han and wife Jeannette Geurts all of The Netherlands; special friends, Art and Nancy(Nell) Walker of Flushing and Fritz Miller of Florida; many nieces, nephews and friends.

I wanted to come and tell you Bob left us today at 11:00 a.m. It was so peaceful and quiet, no struggle. His pain is gone now. Jo is doing as well as can be expected, but I am sure the next few days will be hard. I will post his obituary tomorrow. The house has been filled with food and loved ones. Last night his son played the guitar and we sang for a long time. Then this morning he just slipped away. You are all in my heart and prayers. I will need your company, and oh how I hate this beast that takes our precious ones from us. Love Nell

Wow, this is a painful journey for loved ones too. Bob is getting very near the end I think. Today hospice was around a lot, and all his kids are here now. He is still fairly alert at times and responding some to us, but we are watching him hourly slip away. In some ways it is a very precious time, because there is so much love there. He is so brave and so peaceful. FINALLY the pain is under control, thank God. Hope I don't discourage anyone, and thank you all so much for being here. Love Nell
